catieb Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Hi all, I have an Aldi Tevion TDR251HD 250gb DVD Player / HDD recorder. Today was the first day when I've had the unit on most of the day. The front right got quite hot, and just recently, live TV faded and went black and white. I'm hoping the unit recovers and starts playing colours again when it cools down. I think it's the timeshift that's causing much of the heat, and I don't use timeshift ever, so is there any way to switch that blasted feature off? Also, has anyone else with one of these (or the similar Conias) had the problem of colour dropping out with overheating? Thanks!
Rybags Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 (edited) I've not got that model, but the 160 gig HDD/DVD rec model. Mine gets really hot too, and by deduction it's the cheap-arsed power supply. Feeling the area where the HDD is, it's about as warm as you'd expect, similar to what a USB connected enclosure reaches. The area near the control panel on the unit, which obviously has the power conversion circuitry is almost too hot to touch. I improved cirulation a bit by putting rubber feet under the normal feet on the machine. I'm also tempted to put a fan in the thing. As for dropping to B&W - maybe a solder join has failed somewhere and it's no longer sending chroma. If it's a recent purchase, take it back straight away. I've heard that Aldi have tightened up a bit with returns, I think they used to have exchange for under 3 months or similar but they reduced the time period, and longer means you have to send it away. Aldi now do returns in 60 days, still not bad, but this unit is at least 6 months old, maybe older. Colour has returned now that the heat has subsided. Probably will have to raise it a little to improve circulation. If you DO put a fan in yours, please let me know, cos I'd be interested in learning how to do that. Thanks!
catieb Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 Hi all, Not sure if I should tack this question onto a different thread, start a new one, or post here, but anyway ... I contacted Pebble Ltd this morning about turning off time-shift, because Page 49 of the manual says the TimeShift Menu SHOULD have the following submenus: * Timeshift Default Mode * Timeshift Buffer Mode * Hard Disk Info * Space Management * Empty Hard Disk * Erase Optical Disk My machine ACTUALLY has the following submenus: * Timeshift Buffer Length * Timeshift Buffer Mode * Hard Disk Info * Space Management * Empty Hard Disk * Erase Optical Disk And it's the "Timeshift Default Mode" that lets you turn it off, but I don't have that menu option. They say it can't be turned off "as time shift controls the entire unit", which seems a bit bizarre - I mean, what does it have to do with DVD replay, for example? They then gave me 3 service centres I could send the unit to, which is even more odd, because it's not broken as such, and doesn't need fixing. I've asked for further clarification ... Sheesh! Can anyone else with either the TDR251HD or the similar Conia unit please check to see if you have that menu option, or if it's just me who doesn't have it? THANKS!
