kidhazy Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 (edited) I been noticing audio sync (lip sync) issues with certain Nine HD programs (I'm in Melbourne Metro). I posted over here http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=71075 to see if anyone else had the problem, but got no response - so maybe it's just me. I have a Topfield 7100 PVR connected via HDMI to a Pioneer 508XDA and I see the following problems on both the PVR and the Pioneer Tuner. The problem only appears on certain Nine HD programs - not Nine SD, and not other HD channels. The audio is out of sync with the video on the following programs (in fact sometimes it appears the video is ahead of the audio - if that is possible ! ) : Battlefront Sixty Minutes Hole In the Wall Fringe. A Current Affair (Some of these shows appear worse than others) It doesn't appear on Nine News or the commercials during the above shows. I spoke to an engineer at Channel Nine this afternoon. He hadn't heard of other complaints coming through, but he did indicate the shows I was having problems with did normally come from Sydney (whereas the News and commercials were local). He's suggested to check out "Mornings with Kerri-Anne" tomorrow morning as that is a "live" show, and if that is OK then it should indicate that my devices are within spec and the problem is on their side. So I'll check it out tomorrow morning. Has anyone else in the Melbourne metro area noticed anything similar for the shows mentioned above? Edited September 22, 2008 by kidhazy
MACCA350 Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Yep, was watching Fringe last night and noticed a lip sync problem. cheers
kidhazy Posted September 22, 2008 Author Posted September 22, 2008 Thanks Macca, What device were you using when you noticed the problem?
MACCA350 Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Thanks Macca,What device were you using when you noticed the problem? I was using the Beyonwiz P1 on the HD channel running to the AVR via SPDIF and S-video to the CRT TV. I also have the HDMI hooked up for when I use the Projector but I didn't switch over to that to see if it also had an issue. I haven't checked whether the AVR is picking up the audio through the HDMI connection when I am using the CRT(S-video from the P1 to AVR) as I have to set the P1 to "SD-576i" output. Suppose I could check by unplugging the SPDIF connectionI was surprised as I haven't noticed any lip sync issues in a while.......mind you there's not a lot on NineHD that I watch anyway. cheers

Yes, you're right there - the News is the main one we watch and that is fine. Tonight in my checking I've noticed issues with: A current Affair Two and Half Men Life Of Mammals Poseidon Which is basically the whole rundown so far. The only thing I've seen that didn't have the issues was the News, and all the commercials during the shows. All these shows, switching to the SD channel showed no audio sync issues.
Baci Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Yes, yes, yes. Sony Bravia X Series, audio through the sets optical out. 2 1/2 Men on now, terrible sync issues. Happens with lots of programming and upon reflection news, and other Melbourne based shows don't seem to be a problem. But everything else is VERY bad!
kidhazy Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Yep, UnderBelly in Melbourne tonight was out of sync again. So far in my few days of testing, the only things that I've seen in sync are the local 6pm News, and the commercials between shows ! I checked out Today and Kerrie-Anne (as requested by Nine) and they were also out of sync this morning. I'll get the guy at Nine another call tomorrow. I also noticed that the worse the show is in regards to video quality (and content) the worse the audio sync is - eg. Hole In The Wall and Wipe Out Coincidence, or just another reason not to watch those shows !
kidhazy Posted September 24, 2008 Author Posted September 24, 2008 Rang the engineering guy at Channel 9 to give him an update. Nothing much that he can provide unfortunately as they're not getting any other complaints. So now I'm not sure what's going on as it seems only myself and a couple of others that have noticed the issue. Can I suggest that anyone seeing this problem give Channel 9 a call (03) 9420-3111 and ask to speak to engineering. As I've mentioned before the only things that I've noticed that are in sync are the 6pm news and the local commercials. I'd like to find other examples of what other programs on 9HD that people in Melbourne find to be in sync so that I can check my equipment on those shows as well.
