This is probably a simple question, but my AVR cuts out (reverts to Standby) during movies when certain pitches are hit at certain volume levels, anyone know what it is and how to fix it?

I'm running a PS3 through a Sony DA5300ES with JBL Speakers.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your AVR is going into protect/overload/clip mode, sounds like your AVR doesn't have enough power to drive the speakers fully/safely. Check all the speaker cable connections at the AVR & Speaker itself to make certain theres no strands of wire shorting out but I doubt this is the cause. I take it the problem occurs mostly at high/sharp sounds that come through fairly loud ? If this is the case you need more power to drive the speakers better. It's safer for a speaker to be fully or over driven than to under drive/power it, does your AVR have pre-outs ? And if you have a sub is it active or passive ? If the problem is not enough power then it's a simple matter of adding a AMP to drive your mains and sub at the least and let the AVR just power the surrounds/center.

If everything is setup correctly and is compatible try going into the setup and find the speaker setup. There should be an option to change the speakers to large or small yours will most definately be set on large so change them to small.

A freind of mine had a similar problem not more than two weeks ago, when realising that there was no visible problem I suggested he change his speaker cable as he was only running the small 18 odd guage stuff, this made a huge difference.

I would suggest the following,

Check your AVR is on the correct impedence setting to match you speaker's.

If that's fails i would completly rewire everything & start fresh, this is often the best for peace of mind & something you may have or may not can be found.

If that fails contact sony.
