It's becoming quite noticable that a few forum folk are selling their HDDVD collections - player and all titles.

What's going on ??

What are your reasons ??

Are you selling and then hoping to get all these titles again on Blu-ray ??

Or did the sudden 'excitement' to buy a HiDef player and cheap titles die ???

(*** me - well I've got 2 players - one still boxed / un-used - and 106 movies that I can continue to watch for many more years - with no desire to dispose of)

My guess is sell while they still have some value. I've gone too far now to sell, but am purple and I'm happy with where I am

I'm in the same boat, happy with my xe1 and 100 odd movies a lot that I still haven't unwrapped. they'll both be in my collection for a long time to come.

I recently advertised an XE1, A1 and 65 titles.

I thought long and hard about selling them, but here was my reasoning:

I had purchased the HD-A1 when HDDVD was still new, and then purchased the XE1 when the format war was still on. Many of my tiltes were US imports, and the rest were acquired during the fire sales. Then when the format was no longer supported, I always had the concern about Hardware failure, and I would be stuck with unplayable discs. Why not sell out now, re-invest the funds into blu-ray, speakers etc, and slowly build up a blu-ray collection.

It didn't take long for both players and discs to sell - it was actually someone outside of the forum - but then when it came to the cruch only last Sunday, the buyer pulled out. Normally I would have been pretty irate, but under the circumstances I was actually relieved. I was on the verge of making a huge mistake.

So as it turns out, I was lucky that the buyer pulled out - and I certainly didn't re-advertise. Now I am trying to source an Xbox360 addon to use with PC as a cheap third player to protect my investment.

So if my XE1 breaks down and is unrepairable, I still have the A1 that is more than capable. If both break down, then I either source another player, or sell the discs on ebay. But in the meantime I expect to continue to enjoy the HDDVD format. :D

I think you made the right choice clay_tone - perhaps it was destiny that the buyer was to pull out.

I'm proud of my HD-DVD collection now with nearly 200 titles and it has been my main hobby for the last 6 months or so.

I'm sure that even if my players were to break down with no chance of repair I still have an immense source of HD content that could feasibly be ripped and written to BLU-RAY or Hard Drive for viewing purposes but I will always have the physical media which I'm sure I will look upon fondly in the years to come.

The whole HD-DVD firesale situation has been very exciting to be a part of and now the search for rare titles is keeping my interest up.

While I know not everyone would look upon it the same way but I would never sell my HD-DVD titles or players.

Long live HD-DVD!!!! ;)

I share your sentiments exactly. I have an HD-E1 and an XE-1, and i may sell the E1 later, but with the 110 movies I have I know I'l continue to get enjoyment out of them. I'll be upgrading to a full hd tv soon, as my panels only 720p. So the whole excitemnt will start again for me.

Hmm, maybe it is time to sell my XE1, E1 and about 220 titles.....

Or not!

I'm considering selling my XE1 but not to get out of HD DVD. My plan is to use my HTPC for all my HT goodness once the issues with HD audio are sorted properly. I can't believe it's been this long and the kinks still haven't been wrung out yet but hopefully the day will come soon.

I considered selling mine a while ago but by the time I worked out what it would cost to replace the ones I wanted again on BD (atleast 80% of them) I decided it was just not worth it.

Most of my titles were purchased before the fire sales so were at full price. :o

One doesn't need to sell off their HD DVD titles if their HD DVD player fails. If one has a more recent PC with SATA drive capability then installing a LG GGC-H20L BLU-RAY and HD-DVD Reader DVD Burner BLACK SATA Drive for $162 is an easy way out.

There is software freely available that can rip Blu/HD DVD to the harddrive and for playback from the harddrive. There is no need to lose anything of one's HD collection, managed copy should be a right.

I would be curious as to how long LG will continue production of the GGC-H20L or similar products. I understand there are still numerous options for HDDVD playback, but in 1,2,3 years time, will LG still offer a dual-format drive?

That's pretty much the plan C.M. :). Not sure how loud this drive is though. So far I've managed to make my PC almost completely silent so I'm not in a rush to add a noisey opitcal drive.

As far as cost is concerned though, it's certainly not cheap. $160 for the drive is fine but I've also got to add to this a HDCP compliant video card with HDMI output (~$140) and (hopefully) the Asus Xona HDAV sound card (~$300) and AnyDVD HD (~$140). Add to that the storage space I'm going to need and I'm looking at having to spend at least another $1000 to replace the XE1 and PS3. The downside to this is the fiddly and buggy nature of the PC but the big upside is region free BD/HD DVD/DVD along with DTV and other video media files all from the one unit and one remote control. And personally I love that idea.

Sorry for dragging this OT folks but just wanted to put the idea out there.

GEE... thanks for that C.M !!!

I might go down that track and pick myself up on of these drives (head down to the Chinatown area in Sydney and see if I can find one). Added - 1 Terrabyte HDDs are getting cheaper and cheaper (for back ups) - and then.... whenever the 'other' format blanks come cheap - you might be able to make your own 'red-to-blue' conversion.

Have we heard from any of our forum friends whom have gone down the 'sell everything' path yet ??

out of my cold dead hands hehehhehe. Awesome player and built like a tank, great upscaler as well. Most of my titles bought at firesale prices some as low as $2 so cost to replace via Blu Ray not cheap. Have a PS3 but no desire for any blu ray titles as yet. Still happy with my choice - thanks Spearmint...

Got to admit I love my XE1 and HDDVD; however am in the process of funding an upgrade and will be parting with half my titles.

I am looking at going Blu just before/after Christmas and will sell the XE1 depending on which player I get.

If the BD35 or Pioneer LX51 I will probably keep the XE1 and most of my remaining titles.

If I go with the new OPPO BD83 with Reon chip then will probably sell XE1 and remainder of titles.

If the latter then would replace about 10% of existing HD DVD titles as they are must haves. Would replace another 25% but not at existing Blu prices. They would need to come down to about A$15.00 - $20.00 before I would buy them.

Expressions Of Interest welcome :rolleyes::lol::P

Average price for 100 Hd-DVDs: $20

Player: $1200

Just can't justify throwing away $3K of kit for $1K.

When it's as good or better than the competition.

Why would anyone?

Why would anyone?

Remember Lyle many people purchased their XE1 for $349, and all their HDDVD titles for $5-$10. All of a sudden asking $1000 for an XE1 and 50 titles - not only creating funds to upgrade, but a profit as well.

Edit to fix dodgy spelling.

OK that's a cool strategy.

Thanks, sold my Sony s300 at the same time as the LG purchase had to be cost neutral as dictated by the MOF! :P

That's exactly why I have a GGC-H20L and an xbox addon in addition to my main player.

In fact, I don't even think of myself as having bought 100+ HD-DVD's. I see it as having bought 100+ 1080p movies - at an average of around 10 bux each. My 1080p content will be here with me regardless of what happens with disc formats or players :) :)
