As I am very new to HT stuff etc?

When you buy floor standing speakers say I love they way they look when there is no cover on them ie when you can see each individual speaker.

I told the missus this last night but she said nah you would probably need the cover to protect them from dust etc.

Is she right?

Not going to notice a major difference most likely however Paradigm brand of speakers actually say the covers/grills should be left on.

They are probably also fairly good at protecting the speakers from prying fingers if you have young children.

If the drivers have dust caps I believe there would be no probs, but some drivers just have a center pole where dust and grit may get in and cause long term probs...maybe.

I've always had the covers of my speakers OFF, and prefer them off. I don't think there's any problems having them off.

I would cry too :o . I have a daredevil 2 yo boy who always carries a plastic hammer ( nicknamed "bang bang") with him, so the covers always say on!

Thankfully no little kids or cats here so the covers stay off mine, they look much better that way IMHO. :D

I think I'm more scared of the cats thinking the speaker cover material is a kind of scratching post :o better destroying the cover than the speakers i suppose. ^_^

Get a red cattle dog like mine, then you dont have to worry about cats

I run mine with the grills on because Sunlight is consistently on one cabinet during the day and I dont think UV light is good for the drivers over a long period of time. Hope that helps.

Very true, kids do seem to love poking at speakers with the covers off. I was in a JB Hifi the other day and cringed when I saw some Dali Ikon 6's (and every other speaker on display) with the tweeters pushed in.

I've preferred the sound of every speaker I've owned with the grill off, except for a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 8.1s which I like with the grill on. Problem is that the 8.1's have such terrible grills that they don't like staying on.

Aaaah Wharfedale Diamond 8 series - fantastic speakers at the price they sold for, almost looked bowersy ;) (new word i just made up :D ) with the yellow carbon fibre cones... if you squint a little.

I always wondered how they made speakers that sounded so good at such a low price point (weren't a whole lot of decent, budget speakers around when they were released - except maybe tannoys mercury series)... until i had a good look at the cabinets (fine for the cash but cheap cheap vinyl wrap) and tried to 'play' with the grills (figured i had decide on or off as it seemed you only got one go at removing and re-attaching them before they would break forever) :D

Moving the manufacturing to china made huge leaps and bounds on the build quality stakes for the diamond 9 series...

Speaking of the Wharfedale's, i keep my Diamond 9.1's with their grilles on becasue i actually like the look of them with it.

I take the grilles off occasionally to get a look at their lovely cones. ;):blush:
