Zinzan Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Hi All, I think i've seen a topic on here before about moving your plasma, but unfortunately through search i can't find it. I have a 60" Pioneer Kuro and am extremely cautious about trying to move it myself - and am moving house in a few weeks. Beyond removalist companies who offer transit insurance and specialist packaging, does anyone have any recomendations in the sydney area for companies that move plasma's/you've had good experiences with/can recommend etc? Any war stories/words of advice from those who've been through this before? thanks in advance for any advice Tim

I have heard of people doing this before. cheers
50mxe20 Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Did you try searching topics only on the keyword 'moving'? Pio 507 And Moving House

On an unrelated note how much do you want for your old place
evil_josh Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Did you try searching topics only on the keyword 'moving'?Pio 507 And Moving House No he probably searched for "pio moving" and had it rejected because pio was less than 5 characters. He then probably tried "pioneer move" and had it rejected because move was less than 5 characters He then probably tried "plasma move" and had it rejected because move was less than 5 characters He then probably tried "pioneer" and had 1000 hits. You basically cannot search for any acronym because chances are the acronym will be less than 5 letters which the search facility rejects. Thus the digital TV forum will not allow any search containing such items as: DVB, Sony, Aldi, Myer, HN, JB, Hifi, Bose, Pio, LG, PVR, HTPC, OSX, LCD, OLED, RPTV, HDMI, DVI, VGA, USB, USB2, Amp, Home, HD, SD, and so on which is pretty ridiculous. I'm not trying to be annoying but lets face it the search facility on this forum is sh!t and I don't think it's fair to bag people who have trouble wrestling with it. What's doing forum admins?
50mxe20 Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Tell us something we all don't already know. So knowing this what do you do? Rhetorical. I'll tell you. You look for a keyword that has more than 5 letters. Gee, I wonder what a word could be that might suggest moving. Hmmmmmm. I know I'll trying 'moving' Took all of 10 seconds to do. And Voila!! Admittedly, I've seen these threads before so I did have the prior knowledge that moving might be a good choice. And of course it is important to go to the advance setting and use search on topics and list as topics because otherwise one gets hundreds of hits that take forever to wade through.
deukp Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 ^ being a smartass is awesome aint it ontopic: you might want to contact special removalist with insurance( if there is such a thing) or you could ring one of the retailers that deliver tv normally and ask them for quote, like domayne, HN, clive peters or dse powersquad( they all have a deliver and install services so i dont see how they cant help you, they also come with 12 month warranties on there work so if they screw up hound em down ). you could always buy 500m of bubble wrap.....well that what i would do anyways
HTD Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Any Home Theatre installer could do it and should have the right insurance just ask them first. They will unistall it for you and then install it in the new place. Is this not obvious why would you call a retailer for a Tv install whats wrong with the local installer. I'm going to start advertising under furniture removals in the yellow pages instead of home theatre, if it's not the first place you look for anything to do with TV installs
navsfletcher Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Did you keep the original shipping box? If you did, I reckon you'd be OK moving it yourself. Just remember to keep it upright & strapped down so it can't move. I reckon people get too paranoid about these things - just think how much rough handling they must take from the factory gate to your home, and they (nearly) always survive that journey.
50mxe20 Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 ^ beingJust trying to help people learn to help themselves. There were good tips and discussion in the threads I linked to. All one has to do is search and read. Most of this stuff has been asked and discussed before.

I didn't know that. As to the op - any professional movers can cope with a large plasma and it should be covered by their insurance if the unthinkable happens. The stand upright advice is preferable but is not necessary. It is obviously safer upright (if secured) because things won't be dropped on it, trod on etc. I watched HN staff move plasmas in their warehouse when I picked up mine. They certainly weren't that gentle - & I was watching.
Zinzan Posted September 16, 2008 Author Posted September 16, 2008 hi guys, evil_josh was right, I pretty much tried all those search terms and didn't find anything! In hindsight lyle simply "moving" would have worked better, sorry I didn't try it. Although I knew topics existed on this before, hence my apology in the first post about not being able to find them, as knew my lack of expertise with the search feature was going to bring down the police on me!!! Didn't mean to stir up the hornets nest! HTD - nice try But just renting actually I had thought about giving the Pio installers a call and will do so today. Of the removalists I have called, it seems most removalists offer insurance as a seperate item, approx $10 per $1000 of insured goods....for $10k tv that's $100 extra just in insurance! i know some might say "but you just spent 10k on a tv, what's $100?" - not that straightforward im afraid, our friends at HSBC bankrolled my original purchase! Also, unfortuantely I don't have the original box - i couldn't be there for the install, and my mate who was there for me didn't ask them to leave the box. Thanks for all the advise guys, much appreciated, and I will check out the thread lyle linked to as well.

If DIY move is an option then worth trying this... not cheap but you will have a box for the next move. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Removal-Packing-Box...1QQcmdZViewItem great screen, goodluck.

What's doing forum admins? /quote] I know its off topic but Im suprised as to the response when Evil Josh made this point? (even person how started the topic agrees!) For a site that features a load of techology virtually defined by letter/abbreviations.. the search function here is pretty useless and leads to a lot of redundant posts. Is it some sort of blasphemy to suggest that it may need improvment? Edited September 17, 2008 by gamma male

gamma male Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 (edited) Good idea - have done so in 'forum suggestions' Not sure if it will do any good however (does anyone ever read the posts there??) Edited September 17, 2008 by gamma male
lidz Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 When my pio 508xda was installed I kept the box as I knew I'd be moving soon but the installers also mentioned that pioneer keep a load of the empty boxes for when customers move. Just ring pioneer & see if they can drop a box round, pretty sure they said this was all free too.

I do, but it seems you don't gamma male. The solution to the search issue is in that forum... it's even a sticky! Apart from that, I also posted links to it, in this thread, which you obviously didn't read either.

I haven't used removalists for many years and think what you are saying is that you are not covered for their mistakes. Surely that can't be right? That means they can be a slipshod as they like & don't have to pay for the consequences?
Zinzan Posted September 17, 2008 Author Posted September 17, 2008 I haven't used removalists for many years and think what you are saying is that you are not covered for their mistakes. Surely that can't be right? That means they can be a slipshod as they like & don't have to pay for the consequences? I haven't dealt with home removalists before, but I have organised many site relocations for clients and when doing office moves, there's a lot of fine print - basically, if you see a removalist being completely negligent and dropping a PC for exmaple, then yes, they are liable, but they pretty much disclaim liability for anything "in transit" - so if things move around in the truck, etc, any damage is not covered. Hence it is always recommended to take out "transit insurance".
