kulfi Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 my mate has a changhong pt5016 and it says hdtv ready on the panel, but there is no hdmi input..is there any way to get his ps3 in HD on this tv? thanks HDMI is not the only way to get HD signal to a TV. You can also use the RGB component connectors or try HDMI-DVI (if available).
pgdownload Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Tough panel to find info on. Changhong Oz only know of the pt5000 and that has HDMI inputs Its buried in the US flat panel catalogue here: http://www.changhong.com/changhong_en/changhong_global.htm Basically the TV is 1024x768 so quite capable of showing HD to good effect. Can't work out if it has an inbuilt tuner but if not you can plug in any HD STB or PVR and use the component or rgb connections to transmit HD just as well as HDMI. Regards Peter Gillespie
kulfi Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 pgdownload, The OP is asking for a way to connect a PS3 to the ChangHong and watch HD content. He isn't asking for ways to receive HDTV.

iron99 Posted September 15, 2008 Author Posted September 15, 2008 well we checked the back and cannot find a hdmi port..it has component and dvi. Can component be used to get the crisp hd image or is it going to be similar to the red white yellow connection? thanks for the replies
Shonky* Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 (edited) Component is substantially better than the Red/White/Yellow connections (composite) and as mentioned is nearly as good as HDMI in terms of picture quality. DVI is essentially the same as HDMI minus the ability to carry audio. So a HDMI to DVI cable will work for games at least. HOWEVER if the display is not HDCP compliant you will probably have issues playing Blurays at their full resolution and/or DVDs upscaled. Edited September 15, 2008 by Shonky*
pgdownload Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Can component be used to get the crisp hd image or is it going to be similar to the red white yellow connection?Yes component is as good as PQ as HDMI roughly speaking. You question is actually not about your TV, its about if the PS3 can output HD on component. If so then you're all set.Have a read of the Diving into Digital thread as it has some general stuff on cables and TVs. Regards Peter Gillespie
kulfi Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Looks like another noob who is a potential victim for a being fleeced on Monster HDMI cables, because salesmen use this trick very often - saying that it's impossible to receive HD pictures without them. HD means HDMI and HDMI means Monster cables - "that'll be yours for the trifling sum of $300 per metre, sir". I believe a metre-long thread of sterling silver can be purchased for less than that !
sLug Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 I have had the ps3 connected through component connection before and it can do up to 1080p from the ps3 but the only drawback is it wont upscale DVDs to 1080p from the ps3.But over hdmi it will.
prawns Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 ......"that'll be yours for the trifling sum of $300 per metre, sir". I believe a metre-long thread of sterling silver can be purchased for less than that ! I got 3metres of monster cable on ebay "buy it now" for about $50 delivered a few months ago - Skip the salesmen its cheaper! (mines running mainly blu-ray from the computer @ 1920x1080 no picture problems) Incidently, you can get a blu-ray drive for a computer for around the $200 mark on ebay these days, cheap as chips!
