I was really excited the other day when I learned that many US stations are re-airing older programs of Casey Kasems American Top 40, in particular, many of them are re-running the countdowns from the 80's. I tried listening to some of the stations.

I went into the website of KQLL in Tulsa Oklahoma, and upon opening up their radio stream, I was told that I was not a US resident, and that I could not listen to the station. Got exactly the same issue with WMMX FM Dayton Ohio.

I somehow suspected that it had to do with their radio station server detecting that my computer was located in Australia, so I tried some proxy servers with no luck, and looked at trying to get a US IP address. Again I had no luck with that either.

Is there any way of getting a US IP address, a proxy, or anything, just so I can listen to these stations?

2prfm.com,

Sorry but you have buckleys.

Your IP address identifies you as Australian and you will not get through your ISP if you change it.

The ISP converts the Web address into IP addresses such as ##.###.###.##

Sorry but you have buckleys.

If an anonymising proxy is used and its a standard mp3 stream (ie, no funny business loading javascripts etc - 99% of mp3 radio stations are bog standard) and the proxy itself hasn't been blocked it will work. Very few of the blocked services use something as simple as DNS PTR records to tell you are in Australia because its so easily circumvented. Most use a database listing the region that blocks of IP addresses are assigned to.

Thanks for the 2NUR link, had no idea that this station was doing it.

I'm not really a fan of wikipedia, but accidently came accross this the other day, which lists all stations that carry the American Top 40 Flashback shows.

Also thanks for the proxy info, just tried the following URL, and that KQLL station is coming in loud and clear. For anyone else who has the same problems as I did, try this. (make sure none of the boxes are ticked)

The legendary “King Of The Countdown” Casey Kasem returns to Australian airwaves with the Original American Top 40 from the 1970s on the ACE Radio Network throughout Victoria. The 3 hour weekly block will be a randomly selected, digitally re-mastered AT40 precisely as it aired from the years between 1970 through 1978. Mark Taylor, Group PD of ACE told Jocks Journal: ”Casey Kasem was an icon of 70s radio right around Australia. It’s a great way to revive those classic memories of the 70s each Sunday – not just playing the hits from the era, but actually allowing listeners to re-live them as they heard it.” The show will be heard on 3CS Colac, 3HA Hamilton, 3SH Swan Hill, and Gold 1242 Gippsland between 9 and Noon Sundays and between 6-9pm Sunday nights on 2AY Albury/Wodonga, 3WM Horsham and 3YB Warrnambool. Casey Kasem’s Original Top 40 is distributed by Bruce Ferrier at Grace Gibson Productions

sorry to say that the 2nur stream is really horrible, it buffers like no tomorrow, and my broadband works fine, their ISP must be overloaded or busy.
