johnyd Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Im looking at getting a new cheap lcd/plasma and Im seeing heaps of 42"+ plasmas for around the $1000 mark, but they only have 1024x768 resolutions. I will be sitting between 1.5-2m away. Would these be better than a 32" 1080p LCD? Movies, Gaming (up to 4 hour sessions) Can someone who owns one take a photo at about 1.5m away while playing a DVD or some HD content for me please? Its kind of hard to walk into a shop when the closest one is 80km's away, Id prefer to know what I want when I get there, and not waste time looking at models that are not right for me.

Picture is great at 1080p and at your viewing distance is noticeably more deinfed for 1080p content.

Bought my elderly mother a 42" Samsung a month ago with that resolution. I wouldn't go for the 32" in preference. The 42" at even the slightly lesser resolution would be much better.
kulfi Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 (edited) Bought my elderly mother a 42" Samsung a month ago with that resolution. I wouldn't go for the 32" in preference. The 42" at even the slightly lesser resolution would be much better. Not to mention, the fact that most games are 720p and that the 32" A550 cost a bit more than $1200 for a TV that's 10" smaller. Unless the OP is afraid of burn-in/image retention issues, I'd say go the plasma for $999. Edited September 12, 2008 by kulfi

kulfi Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 more than $1200?Now who's ripping off the masses, Kulfi? If you're willing to ticket the 32" A550 at $1199, I'd say amen to that.

Owen Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 A none 1080 42” Plasma is NOT suitable for a 1.5 meter viewing distance, you will see the individual pixels from that close on a 42” 768 model at that distance.
johnyd Posted September 14, 2008 Author Posted September 14, 2008 I could strech the viewing distance out to 2.5m maybe a bit further if I do some re-arranging of my room. My room is 3x4m roughly but my current setup is squished into a corner with a speaker sitting in the middle of the room. It would be a lot easier if it wasnt for the massive built out cupboard along one wall and the queen double bed in the room. My parents have the a550 32" but I want something a bit bigger. I'll see if I can find the layout I made when I was trying to figure out what to do last time I bought something new.
pgdownload Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Sorry but your best bet is to take a day off and go the 80kms. You can always come home and do the ordering over the phone once you get an idea of what you're looking at. FWIW you'd be hard pressed to differentiate 1024x768 screens from a 1080p one at 2m. A 32" TV of any type and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between SD and HD channels. Looking at photo's of TVs is pointless - There's so many factors (the TV they use, the camera they use and its settings, your monitor, etc.) - get down to a store and have a gander. mrmaxwell1503559518 Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 There is nothing wrong with the entry level Panasonic plasma at 2-3m viewing distance. You will see pixelation at 1.5m but these are very good TV's for the money and 42" is sooo much better than 32". If you order sight unseen I am sure you will be happy with your purchase, but if there is anyway you can see some TV's in the showroom before you purchase make sure you do.
johnyd Posted September 15, 2008 Author Posted September 15, 2008 It is fairly easy to get into town, since I go to uni there, Im on break atm though. Going and looking isnt a problem, but I dont want to rely on the dodgy settings that the tvs often have, and dont want to go through the store trying to adjust every tv to see if I like it. Also I am a bit in the dark as to the quality of brands and models, if any are poorly made and die often or have glaring defects that I may not pick up in a store from a couple of minutes looking at them.

Agreed. I watch mine at around 2.3-3m which is fine. Closer & the pixels are obvious.
