Buying duty free at airports can be a trap but preliminary research suggests the shops are not stocking them yet - at least not at Auckland.

So, anyone have experience in buying duty free?

I'm expecting a new range of improved players will be available next year around mid Feb when we will be travelling to the shakey Isles.

TIA

I think duty free these days is redundant, especially for electrical goods. You only get 10% off and you could negotiate that every day of the week anyway.

Exactly what I was going to say.

However.... You can now buy at ANY store in Australia and claim back duty free when you leave. So haggle at your box mover and then claim back the GST. For a BD player it's quite bulky really to cart out of the country and back again for 10%. Not worth the effort IMO.

Conditions:

1) Bill must total more than $300

2) You must take the items with you as carry on. They generally expect to see them.

I wouldn't bother - you can get better prices around the discount stores. As for carting a big item around with you on holiday???... and then having to explain it on return and possibly get hit for duty(depending on cost). And you do have to show it on departure to claim the TRS(10%off).

I really did not expect to lug it over and back again but hoped someone had info about shopping in NZ.

Anyway, thanks for the responses. As you say the 10% is no really big deal but saving a hundred or so dollars would be nice if it was no great hassle. But it well could be just that. :(

Thanks. I guess that puts the nail in the coffin of that idea. ;)

This is the best way to go, ofcourse you could put any old piece of AV Junk in the new BR box and once on the NZ side deposit it in a bin  depends if the 10% is worth the effort.
