petetherock Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 First don't download yet!!! The release of PlayStation 3 firmware 2.40 last night seems to have caused a wide number of issues for those who updated to the new release, as we reported earlier. It now appears that Sony has since pulled the newest update, reverting back to firmware 2.36 as the most recent available version. We were just prompted to download version 2.36 after having skipped the most recent pair of PS3 software updates. http://kotaku.com/5021458/ps3-240-update-p...s-and-solutions While it seems like every time the PlayStation 3 undergoes a firmware upgrade is plagued by people trying to blame broken systems on the update, last night's 2.40 update seems to have caused genuine issues with many posters over at the official PlayStation forums. Owners of PS3s in all shapes and sizes have been reporting that their systems were loading to the initial PlayStation wave screen and simply hanging there after applying 2.40. No icons, no controller functions, no nothing, just the wave across the middle of the screen. There doesn't seem to be any real pattern as to which systems are affected. 60GB, 40GB, 20GB, and 80GB systems alike have all been afflicted with the issue. We've contacted Sony for word on the issue, but in the meantime several of the more tech savvy forum posters have determined how to fix the issue, if you're willing to yank out your console's hard disk drive. Users found that removing and reformatting their PS3 hard drive and then reinserting it into the console would get the system to boot completely, after which it asks to reformat the disk again and everything runs normally. Of course they lose all of their saved games and have to redo all of their downloads, but I suppose that is better than sending in the system for a $150.00 repair. One can only assume that the update was the catalyst that caused certain data on affected hard disks to become corrupt, rendering the system unbootable. It would certainly explain why only certain systems are being affected, and why Sony couldn't have caught the problem in the first place. We'll keep you updated on the issue as we learn more. petetherock Posted July 2, 2008 Author Posted July 2, 2008 Ok now what it was supposed to do: Features so far ~ Send and receive messages while in-game ~ Launch different game while still in-game ~ Check downloads while in-game ~ View thumbnails of pictures ~ Activate/change BT headset while in-game ~ Date and time displayed after pressing PS button ~ Play music from HDD while in-game (supported games not yet known) ~ Google search bar ~ Trophy support For users of the PS 3 as a video player: Supports upconversion of recorded Blu-ray Discs (like 1080i programs recorded from HD broadcasts - to 1080p). This applies to BDAV discs, not BD-ROMs or BDMVs. Also newly supports upconversion of video on the hard drive, memory sticks, and SD cards, as well as frame noise reduction and block noise reduction for this media. When playing back DTS off of DVD, it now supports playback of DTS-ES and DTS 96/24, as well as Blu-ray Disc DTS-ES Matrix soundtracks. - yippee! A new addition is a mini control panel for music playback, as well as support for MP3 Surround files. MP3 Surround files are converted to LPCM for output. Those who did download it found that the issue with the New Line DTS-MA 7.1 was fixed.
Chui2 Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I did the update, and haven't had a drama. Fingers crossed
ministry Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Hmm i have the update on a usb drive ready to install, i think i'll wait now.
JohnSof Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I did the install last night and played DBZ and then using the ingame XMB switched to MGS4 with no issues. I am using a a 320GB drive tho. Fingers crossed it remains like that.
attilathepun Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Fingers crossed it remains like that. if it has worked once then it is fine - it is strictly a work/didn't work situation. I had no problems either.
DansDans Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 if it has worked once then it is fine - it is strictly a work/didn't work situation.I had no problems either. Thats good news - mine worked OK after the updated. I did it off a USB HDD though. Is this really true though? Some people report this story as a fake
Luis Syphur Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Sounds bogus. I haven't seen anything on the forums and my update worked fine, as everyone elses seems to be. Usually if there is an issue Sony put an announcement out straight away and get's it fixed asap.
JohnSof Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 (edited) Taken from http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/07/02/sony-a...-2-40-problems/ As reported earlier, firmware 2.40 has been taken down. Playstation.Blog has a post acknowledging problems with their latest firmware and assures us that it's only temporary. A commenter concerned about those who have 2.40 installed already was met with a response of "we've received no reports of hardware issues following a successful install," so those of you who have already installed the firmware have nothing to worry about. Stay with us as more information is available. So I don't think it sounds bogus. Edited July 3, 2008 by JohnSof
Luis Syphur Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Usually if there is an issue Sony put an announcement out straight away and get's it fixed asap. Ok, I was right on the second point though. PS Blog Info As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up. At least mine worked
Dice Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Sorry to raise something a little off topic but I've just ordered an 80gb Region A PS3. Is it straightforward updating the firmware although the player is from a different region?
mitchmar Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 my update worked fine, it now plays Hairspray DTS-MA 7.1.
com59841503560232 Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I did the update, and haven't had a drama.Fingers crossed same here
com59841503560232 Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Sorry to raise something a little off topic but I've just ordered an 80gb Region A PS3. Is it straightforward updating the firmware although the player is from a different region? makes no difference, mine is region A
reags Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 mine works fine, but the patch was useless for me as it requires more patching for ingame music and trophies.....which just about most games dont currently support. Sony shouldve contacted and forwarded their 2.4 beta to have it pre-patched prior to releasing it to the public. at present, the patch is more like a preview rather than complete. disappointing after all the hype.
the_wonderchild Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I can't download it from the website on my PC right now. Guess i'll try tommorrow because my PS3 ain't ethernet connected at the moment.
ajm1503559545 Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I believe the update has been removed for now. According to Endgaget anyway.
the_wonderchild Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 ahhh....that would explain that then. Guess there wasn't much too much that i was after or already didn't have from previous downloads.
petetherock Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 No worries I have a Region A 40G from Singapore. Sorry to raise something a little off topic but I've just ordered an 80gb Region A PS3. Is it straightforward updating the firmware although the player is from a different region?
Neon Kitten Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 For users of the PS 3 as a video player:Supports upconversion of recorded Blu-ray Discs (like 1080i programs recorded from HD broadcasts - to 1080p). This applies to BDAV discs, not BD-ROMs or BDMVs. Ah crap, why not BDMV discs? I have a Nine Inch Nails disc that insists on displaying in 1080i/60 on the PS3, while according to the disc authors on every other Blu-Ray player it'll be correctly decoded to 1080p/30. Also newly supports upconversion of video on the hard drive I've always had hard drive video play at 1080p regardless of original resolution. When playing back DTS off of DVD, it now supports playback of DTS-ES and DTS 96/24, as well as Blu-ray Disc DTS-ES Matrix soundtracks. - yippee! About time! A new addition is a mini control panel for music playback If you mean the on-scfreen menu that comesn up when you hit the "triangle" button while playing a song, wasn't that always there? as well as support for MP3 Surround files Which are so common I've never, ever seen one :-D mine works fine, but the patch was useless for me as it requires more patching for ingame music and trophies..... No, it doesn't. Games will require patching, but the firmware's ready to support them with both functions when they do.

petetherock Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 Not everyone uses the PS 3 as a games machine Many use it mainly or solely as a BR player, like me. This forum is meant for users of the PS 3 as a BR player. This thread belongs in the Game Console section.
