remi1au Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Been lurking around this forum for a while now, trying to decide what AV receiver to buy. I have decided on the Yamaha rx-v663 after flirting with the onkyo 605 for a while. Decided on the 663 mainly cos Onkyo's are abit thin on the ground in Perth, and I couldn't find a 605, and the 606 is too expensive. What is the best price anyone has got on the 663, and where from ? I am hoping to get one for around $800, but perhaps that might be a bit ambitious as I am getting phone quotes at around the $1000 mark.
Coops221503560911 Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I would aim for under $800. I saw it for $900 at a couple of HNs.

I have observed that retailers in the eastern states are generaly more competative than in the west .... bigger market I suppose.

This was without too much haggling - I just asked the salesman for his best price. Last Friday (27/6/08).
remi1au Posted July 4, 2008 Author Posted July 4, 2008 Thanks guys ... handed over the visa card last night. Got a quote from Rick Hart for $750, but they had no stock with a min 2 week wait ... The next best quote I could get was $790 from JB, they said there was no way they could match the $750, claimed it was less than cost (which I dont believe). Anyway, I couldn't wait 2 weeks so I got it fom JB for the $790. I think I got a good price ..... got the weekend to set it all up with my Jamo speakers, PS3 and F81 telly which is a bit daunting being a bit of a noob to home theater....
kermuffle Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 (edited) Okay, not sure if this is overly OT, but where can a Onkyo 605 be found now for around $600.00? SORRY wrong thread! Edited July 4, 2008 by kermuffle

skidoo Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 I like the 663 except not enough HDMI inputs, only 2, otherwise I'd probably get it.
remi1au Posted July 6, 2008 Author Posted July 6, 2008 Hi, how does your yamaha sound with your jamo? I'm looking at getting the same amp with some jamo speakers as well. Well .... got it set up .... still lots of tweaking to go. I'm not convinced that I'm getting hd sound ( i'm a bit of a noob), when I check the status screen of the PS3 it says Linear PCM for the audio, not True HD or DTS HDMA or any thing like that ... more investigation to do. But to my ears its sounds great even for music, but then again I am completely new to home theater and I've got nothing to compare to. My wife insisted on a "discrete" speaker system, hence the Jamo A102 HCS 5. I still think music sounded better out of my old Pioneer A400 and Tanoy 609's.
MichaelHodges Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Do you know what analogue to HDMI upscaling means? I am looking at the difference between the 663 and the 863, only the only major difference is better power output from the speakers and the 863 is able to upscale. Am i getting it all wrong but does it mean if i have a dvd plugged into the receiver it will upscale the image to 1080p format of my HDTV tv? Interested to know how your 663 sounds as I am looking this also.
Shonky* Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 863 has 1 more HDMI input too. 663 only upconverts. 863 upconverts and upscales. Yes if you plug your DVD player into a component input at 576p for example the 863 should be able output 1080p via HDMI. There's probably minimal benefit here since the scaling process is probably no better than what's in your panel. Alternatively a good upscaling DVD player could do the job better. Even if you don't have the "upscaling", the panel will still have to scale it to its native resolution so don't worry about it being "incompatible" if you don't get the 863.
Davidian Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 (edited) I purchased the 663 on the weekend from JB in Hobart - didn't quite get the price I wanted, paid $900, but everywhere else was $200 more, not in stock and weren't real interested in beating the price JB gave me! Anyway, not too fussed about price, looking forward to finally hearing lossless audio rather than a stereo mix being faked to 5.1 (which is what my current receiver does)... get my amp this weekend when a friend picks it up and brings it to me up in Launceston! The wife is away in QLD for a conference all weekend, so there will be a lot of bluray love going on! Hopefully I figure out the audio settings for the PS3 without too much hassle! In a little while I'll have to look at new speakers, then a 1080P projector...where will it end? Edited July 7, 2008 by Davidian

The PS3 HAS to decode TrueHD and send to the reciver, so that TrueHD light probably won't light up as the reciver can not decode it in this case. Had a chance to play with the music enhancer and mp3s? I wonder how much better it actuall sounds... Do you think 5.1 is ok for this system?

Yes using it for full home theater stuff, and you are right the receiver doesn't light up the relevant HD audio logo as the PS3 has already proccessed it. Haven't tried MP3's yet ... not had a chance. I find 5.1 to be fine, although I didn't really have a choice as my room is less than ideal for home theater and I've just got no where (that my wife would approve) to hang the other two speakers.
MichaelHodges Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Can I ask what Jamo speakers you got? I am also looking at this receiver which you can get as part of th Yamaha YHT-895. Did you get better quality speakers than you do in the HTIB?

Did you get better quality speakers than you do in the HTIB? I've got the Jamo A102 HCS 5 package, cant say if they are better than the Yamaha ones as I have never heard them. The general consensus on this forum in the past has been that Yamaha speakers are average. The main reason I went for the Jamo's is I had to find a compromise between sound and aesthetics, and the Jamo's were one of the few that got the wife's tick of approval for looks and they have rated well in reviews.

Did you get better quality speakers than you do in the HTIB? I have heard the speakers in the yht package. And compared them to the Jamo s606hcs6. I don't mind them, they are a nice sounding speaker, I just liked the Jamo a bit nicer - but I heard them with a marantz amp and i'm going to probably use a 663 yamaha amp, so hopefully they won't sound different.
MichaelHodges Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 thanks for your comments all very helpful. I have a budget of $1500 for the receiver and speakers. i saw on a the forum i can get the 663 for arond $750, so I really want to spend around $750 on speakers. Am i dreaming in terms of finding good speakers for around $750 to match this amp?

Protagonist Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 How did you get $790 at JB? Having a hard time getting close to $800.
remi1au Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 How did you get $790 at JB? Having a hard time getting close to $800. Just asked the guy if he could match the price i got from Rick Hart at $750, he said he couldn't, best he could do was $790 ... was as easy as that ..... This was all over the phone I might add ... when I went to JB that evening to pick the unit up, the sales drone I spoke to on the phone had knocked off for the day and the new guy I delt with did seem a bit supprised by how low the price was I had been quoted by the first guy .... still did it though.
