Kitten - either you have a direct connection to Sony or your internet is "god" because this download seems to be as slow as always

Well for me it was downloaded and installed in under 10 minutes, reboots included. Maybe my (8Mbit ADSL1) internet connection IS god :lol: (Actually I always seem to get super-fast downloads from the PS Store etc, so perhaps I'm just on the right backbone to have a near-direct connection to Sony)

Either that or EVERYONE has just jumped online to grab it, dont blame them considering how good this update is supposed to be

I'm betting I was just lucky enough to get in early before the server got hammered after news of its arrival turned up on every PS3 blog known to mankind.

As for the update itself, I couldn't care less about in-game XMB for messaging (no friends :lol:) but the new custom soundtrack support is VERY welcome and is now ready for the next Burnout Paradise update next week. The trophy support works fine - once I'd updated, installed and run Super Stardust HD, a SSHD entry appeared in my Trophy Collection menu (after it talked to the server, saying "Synchronising Trophies").

Oh, and the date/time in the top right corner is welcome, but I wish you could customise the date format and the font.

that kinda sux cos none of the games i have are trophy compatible.

The only trophy-compatible game at the moment is Super Stardust HD.

so does this mean in the future most games will end up getting a new update because sony have rolled out this trophy thing?

Some games will. According to Sony's FAQ:

The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:

* BUZZ! Quiz TV

* LittleBigPlanet

* MotorStorm Pacific Rift

* NBA 09 - PS3

* PAIN

* PixelJunk Eden

* Resistance 2

* SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation

* Warhawk

And just announced by the ABSOLUTE GODS OF GAME SUPPORT at Criterion,

A quick summary of what we can tell you about PlayStation Trophy support in Burnout Paradise:

We will support PlayStation Trophies in a future update of Burnout Paradise (But if won't be in Codename: Cagney update). Trophies will be awarded based on your progress in your existing save game - so, when the update arrives the trophies you have earned will reflect the progress you've made in the game at that time (so you won't have to replay the game again to earn trophies)*

* We can reveal that this is why your Burnout Paradise save game has always been locked to your PlayStation Network id - so we could guarantee that when PlayStation Trophies arrived that your save game would reflect your progress.

And stuff like that, along with all the updates and the promised upcoming FREE features and map additions, is why I want to have Criterion's babies :lol:

I read an article somewhere that stated that if an older title gets trophy support and you have already completed the action required to unlock it, that it will automatically become unlocked for you. Don't know how true that is though?

Sony says no, that won't happen - you'll need to go through the game again. They're doing that to stop cheating.

That's why the news above about Burnout Paradise's trophies being retrospective is so cool - they've thought about this way ahead of time and planned for it.

i hear there is a turn off ps3 link on the users menu... so cool... ive just gotten lazier.. don't need to get up from my couch..

Err... you DO know that you have always been able to switch off the PS3 without getting up from the couch, right? Just hold down the PS button.

LOL that explains it then - i have a horrid 1.5Mb ADSL connection via Bigpond in Canberra - enough said. The only time I get good speeds (ie about 150kb/s since thats all I can max out to) is when I download a game or video from the store. Decided to get this from the PS website and use the USB install method. Worked out better for me.

Kitten - I'll add you as a friend. Especially if you are a Burnout Paradise man. I played that to death at the start of the year and have been waiting for this update to get back in the spirit. Whats your screenname, or should I just get if off the ID list thread?

Also, has anyone worked out custom soundtrack support? It wasnt a feature listed on Sony's website - and I would love to use this for GTA IV - I might fire up GTA IV before bed tonight and see if the Trophies have been enabled for that (surely that 1.2 updated added more than just lame online stability) or if these custom soundtracks work. I gather the game will most likely need a patch for those features to work

Looking forward to getting Buzz TV too!

I've always found that downloading from the web site is slower for me; maybe it's just the different paths our connections take, or perhaps your PS3 network settings are different to mine (not sur what port the PS3 wants to use for speedy downloads, but my router's UPnP handles it all seamlessly)

I'm NeonKitten (no space) on PSN - and yep, with next week's update I'll be right back into BP after having played it to ridiculous hours back when it came out. Brilliant game, and all these new challenges being added (and then trophies!) (and then NIGHT!) (and then a whole new island!!) just keep the whole thing interesting.

The GT5P developers could learn a little from Criterion. Booted that up last night to see what had changed; not much! Two huge videos (which now have to be downloaded), some lame challenge event that you can compete in by country - every country EXCEPT Australia/NZ... and virtually no online events for those who haven't conquered all the offline events yet. No wonder hardly anyone was online...!

Also, has anyone worked out custom soundtrack support? It wasnt a feature listed on Sony's website - and I would love to use this for GTA IV

Custom soundtrack support is only that - support. Games have to be patched to actually make use of it (like BP will be next week).

You gather correctly :)

From the change list for GTA4's 1.2 update, I doubt trophies were included - but you never know. Hopefully soon, presuming the Rockstar North programming team aren't all in the Bahamas living it up :)

Anyone know how to turn this off? It's not welcome on my screen... I have enough clocks already thank you Sony :)

Ditto.... I know I've had to turn the clock off once before after an earlier upgrade but I can't remember how it was done. I remember it wasn't difficult just not done from where one would never expect.

Kitten - I've added you, look out tonight or when you boot up your machine next

Also do we know how the BP update will be delieved - either via PSN store or via forced firmware upgrade when you boot BP?

2.40 is apparently not happy and has been pulled:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/02/sony-pu...of-bricked-ps3s

Hope noone here had issues!

Mines dead after the 2.40 update. 40gb model received as part of the Bravia promotion. Exactly as mentioned in JohnSof's link, re-booted to the wave screen and nothing more. Many re-boots later and still nothing.

Sony said they'll replace it but I think i'll try formatting the drive first, as up to a month without my only BD player doesn't sound very appealing.

I think I'll backup my PS3 from now on. I don't want to loose all my gamesaves, it's a lot of time that would otherwise be lost and wasted. Probably a good idea to be doing it anyway, hardware does die unexpectedly, and we (I work in IT) are always making sure our clients have good backup systems in place, so why wouldn't I be doing it for my own gear.

Sure I've updated to 2.4 without drama, but this just highlights the point that things can go wrong, so having a backup of data a month old is better then losing a years worth of gaming. Something good might come out of this problem I think.

Guys did any of you had a similar problem to this?

http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=68266

I installed 2.40 and had no issues.

I d/loaded via the XMB, installed and rebooted my [Aug-07] 40GB PS3 yesterday with no dramas... must be something more than SKU, like a combination of that and something else that corrupts it. There will be a common denominator that hasn't been determined yet I suppose - a particular game save or configuration/setting that acts as the catalyst for error.

Cheers,

Doc.

Well I can probably narrow down the game save line of thinking.

-Only played resistance once

-Downloaded the online store poker game and played a few times

-Recently downloaded the rainbow six online store game but haven't played it yet (so probably no game save data)

These are the only game saves that would be on my PS3. Only really use it as a BD player (more like a door stop at the moment) :D .

Anyways my HDD is out of the PS3 and soon i'll try to hook it up to the pc and use my linux boot disk to format it.

Hmmm... I've got Resistance (only played it once too - I'm useless at FPS), but neither of the others - so let's rule out Resistance... anyone else with either Poker or Rainbow Six that had a fail on update? We'll figure it out folks! :D

dont seem to have any of those problems thank god. But i dont get how it only affects certain people. We are downloading the same update, most likely with the same version console.

No problems here either, update proceeded completely normally, PS3 works just fine.

Lots of save games here, lots of downloaded demos, a couple of bought games, etc etc.

Possible differences that I could suggest:

1. My HDD is not the original 40GB drive that came with the Ps3. It's a 250GB Western Digital Scorpio.

2. The HDD is partitioned to run PS3 flavours of Linux.

those differences have nothing to do with im sure. I have no problems and mine is the 40gb hdd that came withthe ps3. Strange really this problem.

Back up and running.

Originally formatted 40gb drive to NTFS (only option Vista Disk Management would give me) and PS3 wouldn't boot. Formatted drive to FAT32 with linux boot disk and PS3 booted ok. Now in the process of re-downloading the couple of game i'd purchased. Interesting to note that PS3 firmware version is now 2.40 .

All in all not an overly painfull process but I'd have been pissed if this was my main gaming console and all the gamesaves were lost.

Could those having problems and needing to reformat please report the manufacturer (and model if you can) of your HDD?

They do vary.

Oh, and one other thing - has anyone who's been faced with the "brick" problem tried a hard reset of the PS3? (power on via the power button and hold it down for about 5 seconds until you hear a second beep)

Segate 40gb. Didn't take note of model number. Is the model numer visable on the drive? If so I will remove it tommorrow and get it.

Yes I tried the hard reset a few times, even tried the dust removal feature (power switch off, power switch on while holding eject) to see if that made any difference.

Model number's probably not important - from each brand they're likely to be the same.

Many 40GB consoles have shipped with Hitachi 40GB drives (mine from last October did). Whether or not that's relevant, well, who knows? :)

Ah well, that takes care of one possible fix then.

No problems for me since the FW update. I have the original 60gb Pal PS3, however, I'd put a 320Gb WD drive in it, whether it's relevant to this issue or not I'm not sure?!

Posted

No problems launch 60gb upgraded to 250gb.

The problems are in the *vast* minority, from threads on gaming sites it seems almost no one is experiencing it. Firmware updates killing consoles rumours happen after every single update on every single system without fail...

Just updating my 60Gb machine now. The new version number is 2.36? What happened to 2.40?

Sony pulled 2.40 after media reports of the update crashing consoles. I suspect they're scratching their heads trying to figure out what the problem is.
