noisuf Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 There was something I just found out whilst researching on whether I should upgrade my V3800's firmware (tried to find out what the minor improvements mentioned on US Yamaha site are on top of the DTS Bomb fix) considering I do not bitstream DTS HD. What I found out was the V3800 does not truly pass through video levels and clipped it from 0-255 to 16-235. In reality, after a bit of reading, it doesn't really matter if you are mainly watching movies as studios usually use the studio standard 16-235. More info here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1010178 I conducted the test with a PS3, Philips 47PFL9632D and the V3800 using instructions via the location below. I confirmed that when the PS3 was set at Full RGB (0-255), the image did not show up when the PS3 was connected through the V3800 but did show up when I connected the PS3 directly to the Philips 47PFL9632D. http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstatio...ding&page=1 Now this kinda peeves me off a little.. I bought a TV that supports Full RGB, the PS3 sends Full RGB...but the V3800 clips the video level when it should just truly passthrough. Supposedly, the Z11 has a new firmware update to disable the clipping but nothing on the horizon for the V3800. I'm going to send an email to Yamaha to find out what's going on................................
Hydrology Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I'm going to send an email to Yamaha to find out what's going on................................ Take it from somebody who deals with them daily - dont bother! Better to email Chris Moseley from Yamaha UK (can be found in Yamaha threads on the AVForums.com) and see what he says.

Sorry for the rant but I was just a little disappointed. Why touch something (during passthrough) when it does need to be touched?
Jeffie1503561482 Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 (edited) does your display accept YCbCr? does anything happen with that? * just read the link again. question still stands Edited July 2, 2008 by Jeffie
noisuf Posted July 4, 2008 Author Posted July 4, 2008 Hi Mark, I tried looking for Chris Moseley's email at avforums.com but all I could find were posts made by him. I've posted this concern also on that forum. I did find a hdmi guide written by him but the email address was info_av@yamaha.co.uk. I've emailed them but no reply for past 2 days. Jeffe, my display does accept YCbCr. Have not tried your suggestion though. My concern is about HDMI passthrough. May I ask what your suggestion would test or achieve?
ArthurDent Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Unless there's a real good reason to run PC 0 to 255 video levels at the display you should be using Video 16 to 235 as that's what most sources output by default for everything except RGB. The PS3 will happily output the correct RBG 16-235 levels if you set Settings > Display Settings > RGB Full Range (HDMI) to Limited. Or you could just use YCbCr and make sure that YPb/CbPr/Cr Super-White (HDMI) is set to On.
