Nevyn72 Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 I had one fail out of the box today. A lot of money for a globe that last 0.1 sec. I also hate the way many of them take a while to glow brightly. I am replacing my hard to get to globes with the energy saving ones, but others I will stick to the old tried and trusted cheapies. I bought a box of 10x15W globes from Bunnings recently for $20 so the prices are coming down. One pet hate is that the globes frequently have very different colour temperatures between brands, so in effect you have to match brands in multi-globe fittings like I have in my lounge room...... Have you also noticed how they take longer to reach full brightness the older they get?
DrP Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 AARrrggg. For a while now I've been trying to work out an 'intermittent' problem with my IR controller going bezerk. Unbelievably I've tracked it down to a CFL. While the CFL is coming up to full brilliance its transmitting large amounts of infrared at varying frequencies / intervals which is triggering my IR sensors. After a few minutes the lamp is 'hot' and the problem goes away. Its a Philips lamp.
shrek Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Does anyone know if energy saving globes that work with existing dimmer switches are available in Australia? I have seen some (expensive) models on overseas websites, but nothing in the local stores. Erasmus, you can get special ones for dimmers. Have seen them in coles.....mirrabella brand. Says on box for dimmers. Don't recall the price but dearer than standard ones, naturally.
shrek Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Don't think CFLs work with dimmers...The bucket is a great idea.. Some of these globes die quickly (sometimes < 12 months) but on average it last longer than tungsten... Don't think these globes are environmentally friendly at all, I use it because i prefer the daylight white ... Edit: oh, how many of you think these compact lights flicker?? What brands are good? Phillips? Osram? haven't had any flicker problems but i find the osram ones take a few seconds to switch on after light switch is flicked. Other ones i have are phillips and mirrabella and they seem ok so far.
