Guest smashjt Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 (edited) Hi all, I recently got a Sony DAV-DZ850KW and while I was initially happy with the sound (first time 5.1 owner) lately I'm starting to notice it's limitations. (Just not enough oomph) The amp is rated at 3 ohms as are the speakers. I have a set of old Sony 8 ohm speakers from my previous stereo and I'm just wondering if it is safe to swap the two front 3 ohm speakers with the 8 ohm speakers? Will using mixed impedance - 8 ohm front, 3 ohm C/SL/SR cause any issues or damage? From what I understand it should be fine, but I just wanted to double check. EDIT: Would it also be possible to mix the 3 and 8 ohm fronts in parallel, or would that be inviting trouble? Thanks. Edited June 30, 2008 by smashjt

Will be fine, 4ohm draws more current than 8 ohm(all other things being equal) and using the 8 ohm speakers be easier on the amp(there are other factors that will determine whether this is the case at equal in room volumes) EDIT:Would it also be possible to mix the 3 and 8 ohm fronts in parallel, or would that be inviting trouble? Thanks. In series the amp will see a load of 11 ohm, will be ok for the amp. Doing this may not work very well though due to the differences in the speakers other attributesIn parallel the amp will see a load of 2.2ohm, so not a good idea cheers Edited June 30, 2008 by MACCA350
Meld Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Going with higher impedance speakers is fine, but you will need to turn up the volume to get the same loudness level as you had before. 3 and 8 ohm in parallel would give you ~2 ohms. inverse(1/3 + 1/8) Inviting trouble I would say unless you know that your amp can handle 2 ohm loads.

I knew my parallel figures weren't right. Should be 2.2 ohm I'll fix that for the sake of misinformation cheers
Guest smashjt Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Thanks for the replies. From what I've been reading I figured it would have been ok, but it's nice to have confirmation I'll test during the day and let my ears decided which speakers sound the best. I'll also Scratch the parallel idea. Thanks again.
