Jimbo Jones Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 I'm off to Singapore this week, just for a couple of days. Prices on PS3 and Wii are cheaper than Australia, but.......... what issues do I face? Will I have blu-ray region A? (advantage or not?) No difference on Wii? Anything else?? Thanks for help. Jimbo

Jimbo I didn't really check the prices of the PS3, but the Wii is like $600 or something there (not sure what freebies are included though)... Wii's in Singapore are also NTSC (Australia games are PAL)... Unless you import games, don't buy a Wii there (or look for a PAL version). PS3 there will be region A.... Looking at the list in the BD section, and the tracks available there (and in HK), it seems to me that Region A discs have better audio tracks??? Not sure why, I could be wrong.. haha..
bennobee Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Getting a Region A ps3 is kick ass... means you can take advantage of the specials in the US on Blu Ray. Most discs here are all regions (except fox and disney and a few others). Check Mo's list in the blu ray section and it will tell ya all you need to know. The ps3 will also play ps1 games (if you have any) but only NTSC/J ones not pal or NTSC (US) ones. As for the Wii I would stick to an Ozzie one.

Prices on PS3 and Wii are cheaper than Australia, but.......... what issues do I face? Will I have blu-ray region A? (advantage or not?) No difference on Wii? Anything else?? Thanks for help. Jimbo I purchased a PS3 in Singapore 3 weeks ago, purely for the region A BD player. $599 SG (AUD $470) from Mustafa's in Little India. They unpacked the unit and got it working Available in Black,White and Silver. 240 Volt. Of course there's no warranty back here. Also bought the dedicated remote for $49.95SG ($39.95 AUD) I've loaded over 3,000 Mp3's onto the hard drive and use it as a music player. Dealers in Sim Lim Square quoted $550SG plus 4% for Visa and they gave the impression that they were trying to put one over. Region A discs from Amazon.com are cheaper, released earlier and of course there's a bigger range. Recycle.......

I didn't have time to go there last time round, will definitely go there again.... They sell everything there, 24hrs and duty free too... I bought ps3 in HK for around 300aud and I'm very happy with it. Is that the 60GB? Japan sells the 60GB for 400AUD I think... Everything is cheap in HK, I wonder how long that'd last. Because the PS3 is so cheap overseas, I'm reluctant to buy one locally (almost 2x the price)...

While you are over there it might be worth getting a handful of games and extra controller, certainly cheaper than oz, and easier than playasia. Off topic if i may, recycle, what do you use as the media player with the ps3, i have found it a pain in the ass just searchhing for a file and playing a song and not being able to create a play list. regards,

Try not to buy at Sim Lim especially at the 1st and 2nd levels. They rip tourists off. They will offer you a cheap price to entice you and then say 7% GST not included, credit card extra 4%, MUST buy extra controller and games etc... I just received my PS3 yesterday from Singapore. Cost me AUD430. Price of 40gig PS3 in sg should be about $550-$570. I would recommend this place GameScore at Funan IT Mall, very easy to locate. Cheers. Danson

There would be probaly a hundred or so play lists now all in alphabetical order. Just scroll down the aphabetical list to the folder/playlist you wan't and click. Clicking the playlist plays all the tracks or click on an indivdual track to play. I prefixed some playlists with x,y or z so they appear last in the list. It was time consuming but worth it. Make sure you back up the data to an external HDD - just in case. External HDD must be formatted to FAT32 for the PS3 to recognize it. You can also use the external HDD to load all your MP3 files onto the PS3. The player software includes a great Hi Def NASA shuttle moving view of the earth from space. ( Options menu) Recycle...........
func Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I was thinking of purchasing a 40gb through playasia for around $515AUD. Still contemplating but I will see if I can pick an AUS unit up from the bravia promotion.

Chesty Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 From where did you bye the ps3?Full details please(like the shop name and other details)...... You do realise this thread is from July last year??
aseem123 Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 You do realise this thread is from July last year?? yup.so what?
hashius Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 (edited) yup.so what? The reason the original poster was able to purchase the ps3 for $300 was because 6 months ago our currency was nearly the same value as the US dollar. Now that our currency has slumped you will end up paying the same price for a PS3 over in HK/SINGAPORE than you would here. On my recent trip to HK in October I had planned to purchase a ps3 , and when I got there there was little difference in price from here to there much to my disappointment. (I had been holding out the purchase for nearly 3 months waiting to get the better price overseas) Edited March 22, 2009 by hashius
blugum Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Don't think there's much point getting them overseas at the moment for price, unless they have something you couldn't get over here. A silver or white PS3 is intriguing, but with that bulk...
windeath Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I've never understood the allure of purchasing such pricey items like consoles OS. I mean yes they CAN be cheaper but as has been mentioned the dollar sucks (again) so the prices are virtually comparable. Also I'd be so concerned of an issue that required warranty it would definitely outweigh the price saving.

Its now over a year old and has never missed a beat. I was also concerend about warranty but as someone else mentioned above the price was killer back then (around 400 AUD) or a bit over depending on what other stuff you bought at the time.....
