Anyone got any thoughts on this new 50" full-HD Panny coming in July?

I would rather the next gen Kuro, but not willing to wait or pay the premium...hoping this Panasonic is a good second choice.

Should I consider the current 52" Sony XBR? Or stay with the plasma at this size???

All opinions appreciated!

cheers.

I just purchased the 42 and am mostly happy with the product. Picture is amazing on all except fast motion sport. It may be the set up, (I'm a complete novice) but I keep experiencing some pixelation, particularly when a rugby ball is kicked for example and therefore travelling faster than the other action. I have turned off the 'Intelligent Frame Creation' which has helped, but I'm still dissapointed with the quality of sport. I certainly never had the issue with the old NEC panel I replaced.

Have contacted Panasonic and they claim it's an issue with the broadcaster as opposed to the panel. Hmmmm, don't know if I'm being heard there, or is it just my lack of knowledge on the whole situation?

Yes Panasonic are correct and not just telling you lies.We have huge bandwith issues in this country with fta tv and sport shows it up the worst as that is where you get the fastest moving images that need more bandwith. The downside of having a high res screen is it shows up the imperfections

As for the good second choice question i would say make the Th-50pz800a your first choice and pocket the difference because at the end of the day you still get a display with stunning 1080P capabilities ready to go now before the Olympics. The money you saved on the Kuro could then go into a fund for a TH-58PZ800A down the track. I have also just purchased the Pana TH 42PZ800A and was shocked to watch the AFL match and see the football flicker and disappear on the long kicks (TenHD broadcast). I played around until I turned off the "intelligent image creation" which seems to have corrected the problem. I also find the score in the left hand top corner a bit blurry also.

I have just walked into my other room and watched the same broadcast on my original Pana 42 SD set (3 years old) with Phillips DTR 7200 HD set top box and I still reckon it has as good a picture.

Can't wait for the full HD broadcast (like the rugby world cup last year) which should really highlight the benefits of this set. But the day to day stuff really doesn't do this set justice.

Add me to the list of disappointed customers - I've had the 800a for a week or so, and am pretty gutted with the quality of fast moving objects - cricket balls are the worst, followed by tennis and all rugby codes.

The whole reason I bought a plasma over an lcd was because I thought it was the go for sport (which is really all I care about) - and it's just so hard to watch now. I've turned off the intelligent image thing and it is slightly better, but it is by no means perfect.

I was going to upgrade my fox subscription to get the HD channels, but when I took a look at the tv guide today, it's a total waste of time - the single Fox Sports channel they have is almost constant golf, with some AFL replays thrown in - they're not even showing the Wallabies game on Saturday night!!!

i'm also considering the 50pz800a vs the pioneer lx508A 50" - i don't think i'll wait for the 9th gen series because the price of the 50" 508A is coming down quite quickly (now at $4500).

does anyone have any experience with the lx508A vs the 50pz800A? would i be better off with the 50pz800A and using the extra $2000 or so on speakers?

do any of the current lx508A/50pz800A owners use foxtel - how is the picture? and also for gaming via xbox360?

Any feedback is appreciated

Nick

I don't know anything about the Pioneer, so cant comment on the comparison - but I can vouch for the picture on the Pana. I have found it to be amazingly clear for watching anything but fast moving sports as mentioned above, when it really does highlight the broadcast imperfections - particularly on foxtel. I haven't tried it on Fox HD though.

If anyone has any tips on setup to counter this issue, I'd be keen to hear them!

so is this tv not good for sport??? I know its down to the broadcasters poor quality but still..

the thing is I have heard it is very good for sport..

i was reading in another forum somewhere with users experiencing the issue with frame jumping and apparently there is an automatic image correction setting or something similar on the pana's that had to be turned off to correct the problem ? can any pana user's corroborate this?

Close up shots on the action are crystal clear, and even player movement is really really good - but when it pans out for the longer range shot of a ball travelling through the air or along the ground, it looks really distorted (cricket and afl pretty bad) - I had an additional problem with my first Pana that I bought a week ago, and have since exchanged it for a replacement, and still have the same problem with sport - so I definitely don't have a defective TV.

I believe it is a broadcast issue, but am not sure - maybe Mith is onto something, though I think that just might be the intelligent frame creation.

that was what i'd read - IFC

so voodoo even with the IFC turned off you've still got the issue with the ball travelling through the air?

Yep - it was better, but still nothing like what I'd expected it to be. Maybe I just had my hopes set too high, but I was really expecting something special. Everything I'd heard said Plasma was the way forward for sport, and this box was a pretty high standard (as were the exhorbitantly priced cables I got convinced into buying!) - I had no idea the broadcast could have such an impact.

Identical problem here on the 42" 800a - cannot believe it is a broadcast issue as my old Philips with HD DTR-7200 STB never had this problem on HD.

I wonder if Pioneer or other brand FULLHD Plasma owners have this problem ????

I'm have the 42' also, and would be very keen to hear if anyone else has this issue with other brand sets. If not, I would presume we have a pretty damn good case for complaint here.

I too find it hard to completely blame the broadcasters.

I currently have a no name brand HD Plasma (Optical brand, bought from Dodo store in Melbourne 2005) but use a Humax HD set top box as there is no inbuilt HD tuner in my panal.

Even on SD AFL broadcasts I get none of the motion blur/pixel breakup being complained about by others, when its a HD broadcast the picture is nothing short of great. My mate has a Panasonic HD plasma (not 1080p) which is around a year or 2 old. It has an inbuilt tuner and the picture quality on mine is remarkedly better than his.

I can't explain why, perhaps someone more learned could but I can't put it down to the broadcast as I have seen both during the same game (I had to leave his place at half time) and it was clearly evident that his picture basically sucked compared to mine.

I have the 42PZ700 and am extreemly picky when it comes to watching fast moving sports (AFL etc).

The only thing at the end of the day that I was really interested in was the panel's ability to handle motion.

I spent 2 years waiting and researching for a set that could compete with the old CRT.

Since receiving it a couple of weeks ago I have watched alot of sport, tennis, AFL, and cycling via FTA and couldn't be happier.

The set shows no distortion with fast moving objects at all. Perhaps the 700 handles it better than the 800.

I beleive Fox, although I haven't experienced it, is not up to the standard of FTA.

Sounds like the 800 only - you can't miss - the football nearly disappears completely as it travels across the screen. It's not like something you don't notice - so the 700 must be o.k..

All 5 people in my house said at the same time - WTF , the footy has disappeared !!!!

I reset my settings last night, then turned of the Intell frame thingee, and it did seem to be way way better - there was no cricket or tennis (the 2 previous worst offenders) on to check it, but I watched some AFL and it looked really good - no disappearing footy, no blurring - and this was on a foxtel SD broadcast. I'll check it tonight on some cricket to see if it looks any better.

Is it possible that these things can actually "improve" or is it more likely something weird in the initial setup?

On the positive side, I watched a bit of Spiderman 3 last night, and the picture was insanely good!
