kopthat Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 I have noticed a message flash up from time to time when playing SD movies, something about this moive can only be displayed in 576p I have the output set to auto, and on the read out it still says 1080i the max my 720p projector can handle. The projector still seems to think it is at 1080i as well. What does this mean and is there a work around to force the res higher ?

Are you outputting through component, if so, thats all you will get from discs with macrovision, if the disc does not have macrovision then it will output over component at 1080i. HDDVD though will output at 1080i.
kopthat Posted June 29, 2008 Author Posted June 29, 2008 I have the XE1 connected using HDMI and this message could be related to overseas discs but I have the 2.5.1 (???) region free firmware installed. The message just pops up in the typical Toshiba blue message box on the screen

Should only happen due to macrovision and HDCP which should only be a problem over component. If so that could be the problem, otherwise its a mystery
kopthat Posted June 30, 2008 Author Posted June 30, 2008 nope just hdmi from XE1 and bluray in to my cheapy sony amp which switches it out to the pj and component in to the amp from xbox 360 Actually come to think of it, it was a locally bought anime tales from earthsea, and I could noticed some jaggies where the XE1 normally does a stellar job at upscalling.
Cucamonga Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 (edited) I get this message when I change the channel from a SD signal like foxtel to hdmi3, and it goes the error message. If I power the player off and on it upscales in 1080i mode properly. Edited June 30, 2008 by Swish
jayweb Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Well I'm stumped, grab the model number of the receiver and throw it through google with XE1 to see if there are any issues, maybe google "Sony (model number) xe1 problem". Maybe someone else has had that issue. Best of luck, sorry couldnt be more help, J.

I had the same problem, I just removed SD disc, placed HD disc in, then went back to SD disc and 1080i came up. Had to do this the first few times (and only on certain SD) , now it seems to have hardcoded itself to do it automatically?? Worth a try as it seems to have worked for me. Also...whilst we are on the 1080i thing....I have an EP10 with my 1080p Samsung, and a E1 with my old Pana 60a (1080i). I swapped the EP10 over to the Pana to test if it would accept 1080p (manual says yes 1080p/50), but Toshiba would only output 1080i?? Must me handshake thing?
Cucamonga Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 (edited) if you switch from anything SD like foxtel to the Xe1 it will have the 576p error msg and will not output properly. I had the same prob when I first bought my hd-e1. Edited June 30, 2008 by Swish
reggieboy Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Yup I can confirm this and it's a pain. All you do is eject the SD disc and place in an HD disc when it happens. I have to do this every now and then and it seems to happen when I don't have the Yamaha Amp on, as I am putting the disc in. Which would suggest it is an HDMI handshake issue or something. But I don't think that's the total answer. A pain but it's fixable for me at least. Means that if my life depended on putting an SD dvd on in as short a time as possible, I'd be well and truly "brown bread". On a side note I have to say that the upscaling and region free capability of the XE1 make it a truly great machine. I wouldn't say it competes with HD as some others have noted as I have a Pioneer 60 plasma and the difference is notable. But it has been much better than I ever dreamed of, to the extent that I am not interested in duplicating my library apart from the cheap HD's from ezy. It's slow as a dog to get started but when it does the picture is quite astounding from even R1 DVD's. I have Toy Story from years ago in an NTSC box set and it looks amazing upscaled.
cwt Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Dont have an xe1 and could be way of base but does the xe1 manage 576i over hdmi for sd discs ? Many hd players force deinterlacing to 576p over hdmi ;like the pana bd30. Component would be fine for 576i. I think it could be a minimum resolution and your projector is spot on about 1080i . Nothing to stop proper scaling . A message like that could also be linked to the edid handshake of the xe1 to your display .
