I had quite a horrible experiance recently where the person i was living with smashed my Lcd Tv and unfortunatly because they lived there insurance won't cover it as a malicious act.

So I am presented with a two sided question, do I fix the Tv or do I replace it. It is a Sony 40" Bravia D series and i have been quoted 1K for a complete pannel replacement so less than a new tv but my concern is..... will it ever be 100% itself again . The X and XBR series have come down allot since i bought my Tv last November and if my concerns about the D series never being 100% again are correct I am wondering if i would be best just to bite the bullet now and replace/upgrade at the same time.

The seccond side of my question is more in depth about repairing an LCD screen , Assuming someone comes back and says it will never be the same again , How bad of an overall effect Should I expect ? Before this incident happened i was already looking at getting an lcd in my bedroom. Nothing too fancy though which is whats got me wondering if I would be best with a not quite 100% Sony repaired TV or a new smaller Samsung/LG TV which would cost me about the same

Re the Symptoms of the Tv , the pannel has a spiderweb crack at the point of impact , sound and tuner still work but the screen itself is black behind the cracked area then has a pattern of colours out to the edges of the screen. I know it's not exactly easy to say whats going to be best over the internet but if anyone coudl give some feedback I would really apreciate it

If you have accidental damage on your insurance, you can claim it.

Depending on the situation surrounding it and length of time passed, I'd call the police first and go about having them charged for willfull damage etc, then go for the claim on insurance marking it as malicious.

It sounds like you've gotta tempramental partner :excl:

If you bought Home content insurance it sould cover accident damage of household items. However if you only have warranty insurance or the extended warranty provided by the shops ex. JB, Ducksmith or Myer you can't claim the repair cost.

If the replacement cost is $1000 and the labour, delivery fees may cost you $200-$300, I recommand you better get a new TV because the prices have drop a lot in this year, I just bought a Sharp 52' PD series for $3000.

Thankyou for that , may I ask if there is a quality reason behind that advise or is it purely dollar for value driven ? The reason I ask is because even if I upgrade/replace the main TV in the tv room I am still left looking for an LCD ranging around 900 -1500 to go into the bedroom, So in that situation Do you think I would be better off with a brand new smaller TV or would I be happy with the repaired Larger LCD as my Bedroom TV?

Re Insurance I know it sux big time but it is 100% not covered under any policy, They highlighted the relevant section of the policy agreement for me which states that Malicious act coverage does not cover any damaged caused by a resident of the home or by someone with express permission to be there. At the time she was my Defacto and her name was on the lease aswell so the insurance company though sympathetic couldn't do anything for me.

The only thing I have considered which would probably get me covered is saying that it was a cricket ball that came through a window and go for accidental cover

At the end of the day it's a hard lesson I don't think I will ever soon forget , I know that I will for sure be ALLOT more carefull about who my partner is and in particular who i live with from here on out

Right now JB Hifi are on sale right now, 10% off for all plasma and LCD between 01/07 - 07/07, have alook around there and compare the cost of the replacement fees and the prices of the new TV. I don't know the specification of the D series, but it should be not full HD. Right now most of the HD ready TV are under $2000, so I am not recommand to repair it because even you replaced the panel, the TV had lost the warranty cover already. In the worse situation you may have to repair it again after few months.

If you planning to purchased a new TV, make sure to get the extended warranty for at least 2 extra years, most of the manufactures only provide one year warranty, except Sharp and samsung provide 3 year warranty. In Australia the labour lost is expensive, it is a better to get extended warranty to cover the TV's lifetime, many companies like Harvey Norman, Dicksmiths powerhouse, JB and myer provide extended warranty services. I for mine one with two years extended make my TV totally have 5 years warranty and only cost me $180.

I don't think LCD panels can be repaired: they would have to replace the complete panel but the electronics driving it would presumably still be okay.

The only issue would be whether the replacement panel is equivalent to the damaged panel and they don't substitute a lesser one for whatever reason.

Overall though, the TV is still as much into its warranty period as before any repair. Personally I don't reckon repaired items are ever quite as good as they were before, especially when many manufacturers offer refurbished replacements and not new for old (HDD for PCs are a case in point).
