I know this is covered in a few other non specific threads but thought it worth a thread of it's own given the succes of the similar deal earlier this year. This time, the difference is Sony has put a cap on the amount of free PS3s it will give away. Not a bad strategy to ensure quick sales boost just before the Olympics.

Sony bundles PlayStation 3 with Bravia TVs

SONY plans to include up to 35,000 free PlayStation 3 consoles with purchases of its Bravia high-definition televisions, after it filed a $3.5 billion loss on the game unit.

The electronics company revealed this week it had lost $US2.16 billion ($2.25 billion) on the console in 2007 and a further $US1.16 billion this year.

Today Sony announced a second Bravia-PS3 giveaway promotion, similar to the one that ran in December and January, in the lead up to coverage of this year's Olympics.

The game consoles, which cost around $699, can be claimed with purchases of the Bravia XBR, X3100, W3100, W4000 and V4000 models during July. The cheapest of the LCD TVs included in the promotion is around $2700.

The electronics company will launch a live giveaway counter on July 1, allowing customers to check how many free consoles are left.

PS3 sales have been lagging behind those of Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii – due partly to the Sony console's high price tag. The PS3 includes a built-in Blu-ray player, giving it some advantage over the Xbox 360 after the collapse of Toshiba's rival HD-DVD format. Australian sales of the PS3 eclipsed those of the Microsoft console in the first quarter of 2008.

Sony will also launch a phone and SMS service for customers to check on the stock of free PlayStation 3 consoles. People can SMS "how many" to 0429 025 025 or call 1800 882 172.

Hi guys....

Will the Bravia deal prices be set in stone? Or will they vary depending on where you go to purchase one?

If so, can anyone suggest a good place in Melbourne to buy..?

The free PS3 is direct with Sony, so haggle/deal to get the best price you can on the Bravia of choice and then contact Sony to recieve your free PS3

I'd just like the cashback :-) ... I guess there's always eBay

Daz, there was a thread started with the previous PS3 offer for those wanting to sell their unwanted free PS3. Many takers on the Forum....for the right price

Samsung fighting back

Samsung to bundle Foxtel HD+ with TVs

Samsung is set to announce a bundling promotion of a free Foxtel iQ2 box with its new TVs in order to compete with Sony's new PS3-and-Bravia deal.

Samsung is expected to pay the AU$200 installation cost to Foxtel customers buying one of its HD TVs, according to The Australian.

"We are extremely excited about our partnership with Foxtel and hope to further cement Samsung's leadership in HD," Samsung Electronics director of marketing Kurt Jovais told The Australian.

However, this promotion seems to contradict the existing iQ2 promotion offering customers who sign up before August 31 a chance to win a 40-inch Sony X series TV and DAVIS10 system.

At present, there is no further information about which models are applicable for the promotion or how customers without access to Foxtel would benefit.

The deal is due to be announced next week at a time when Seven will also be announcing the introduction of its TiVo service.

Foxtel's HD+ service was soft launched on June 2 and over 15,000 customers had been installed by the time of the official launch on June 22.

Representatives from Samsung and Foxtel were unavailable for comment.

Considering you wont get them much below that price, who in their right mind would pay 2k for a 81cm TV ??

Good price, assume I can sell the PS3 for $500, the final price for 40W4000 would be only $1799

have they got around to sending out all of the PS3s from the last promo yet ?

Disclaimer: I purchased my 40W under the last promo (for a ridiculously low price) and received my PS3 right on the limit of the specified redemption time limit (which was fine by me) ... it's just that I know there were a lot of people who didn't receive such prompt service.

edit: I wonder how many they sold in the last promo, if they had to cap this one at 35K units :o ?

I'm not so sure that 35k is going to be the final figure. If you announce that you are having a promotion for a free PS3, running from 1/7 to 31/7, then you better make sure you have enough stock to last the month!

Every TV sold in this promotion is one less sold to a rival competitor during the Olympic games run-up and one more BD/PS3 convert. The countdown timer on the Sony website is there to convince you to purchase early in the month, not later. I think they could easily top it up to 50k if there is sufficient demand.

Then in August, just before the Olympics they could announce a price-cut. There is obviously room to move in their RRP. None of these TV sets have 100hz or motionflow, so price-cuts is the way to go. They could also cut the price of the PS3 with Microsoft rumoured to launch a new version of the XBOX in that month.

Then again, I could be completely wrong. :D

It doesnt work that way unfortunatley. Sony have made it quite clear if you dont register on the website in the first 35,000 after buying your TV- your SOL :o

The X & XBR are included & both have 100hz & motionflow (which are seperate things).
