BBC Worldwide will lauch two new channels on Foxtel and will take equity control of the UKTV channel as part of a strategic alliance between the broadcasters.

That will take the UK Government owned service's channels on Foxtel to five in 2009, the companies said today.

BBC will introduce documentary channel BBC Knowledge and CBeebies, which will show educational programs for pre-schoolers, during 2009.

That will be in addition to BBC HD, launched this month, BBC World News, and UKTV, which the broadcaster is buying from Foxtel and FremantleMedia.

Foxtel currently has a 60 per cent stake in UKTV while FremantleMedia owns 20 per cent. BBC already owns the other 20 per cent.

"British programming is extremely popular with Australian audiences and this agreement will provide our subscribers with access to the best of BBC Worldwide's outstanding portfolio of global channels,'' Foxtel chief executive Kim Williams said.

Sydney-based Foxtel is owned by Telstra Corporation, which holds a 50 per cent stake, News Corporation (parent company of the publisher of NEWS.com.au), with 25 per cent, and Consolidated Media Holdings, also holding 25 per cent.

I wonder if this will be the end of the ITV/Five productions being shown on UKTV?

If they can show Top Gear with in days of it showing on BBC in the UK that would be awesome. Of course I don't expect such miracles even if I am paying to watch TV. There's always channel BT anyway. I really really hope they show the polar special and anything else HD on BBC HD. It's not to hard to ask really is it? After all it is a world wide phenomenon and so popular in Australia that SBS is doing there own Top Gear show.

Well lets hope the BBC doesnt repeat the crap out of shows like Foxtel did. It was getting to the point where Foxtel was ruining UKTV ( for me anyway )

due to the high level of repeats.

There are some shows in UK that have been going for decades and good old Foxtel would get double the viewing time. One series for a number of years

now they put on around Sep/Oct and show a whole years worth. Then early the next year they would just show the same series again and when you complain

they say look out for new series at the end of the year. It cannot cost that much to buy and its been going for close to 30 years. Plenty more examples.

Fingers crossed it improves.
