Would appreciate if someone could help me connect my audio connections correctly as I'm getting no sound through the amp yet . Still looking through the forum for the correct way to set it up..

Equipment.

Plasma

DVD recorder

Amp

Foxtel pace box

All have digital audio connections.

I want to be able to enjoy all sources through the home system speakers.

The problem is , which components do I connect to which?? Please help.

Does the amp have video switching?

And what colour is it? :P

Seriously though, you might like to put in model numbers.

Connect everything using digital connections and read your manuals about setting each device correctly and make sure that they all match otherwise you could damage your speakers.

sorry I thought I edited my post ealrier to include model numbers, obviously not. The amp is a Pio VSX-D2011 if that helps.

Panel - Pana th-42px8a

foxtel pace box

sony dvd recorder rdr -hx900

Yeah I'm trying to read several manuals pluss the stuff on the forum and it's all doing my head in at the moment.

Also I'm running component rather than HDMI until I upgrade to IQ2 if that's relevant.

Seafarer,

Think this might be what you want:

Source 1 = DVD Recorder - connect coax/optical to AMP, video to AMP or direct to Plasma

Source 2 = Foxtel - connect coax to AMP, video to AMP or direct to Plasma

AMP connected to Plasma only if you route video via the AMP

Depending on your AMP, benefits of doing Video via the AMP is you switch all things at once and only use the plasma as a monitor effectively. I prefer this approach so I only change source on the AMP, not having to change the AMP and TV to change what I am watching.

Hope this helps,

Darren

Thanks Darren. My amp is a Pioneer VSX-D2011 so in case that suits a particular configuration I'd be happy to know.

Video and audio quality is the #1 priority , although ease of use would be handy also.

I'll have another go at it.

Seafarer,

I would do the following (note, I am guessing re connections on your DVD-R and Foxtel):

Foxtel connect COAX digital sound to the AMP, connect component video to the AMP - use COMPONENT VIDEO 2 IN,

DVD-R connect either OPTICAL or COAX to the AMP, connect component video to the AMP - use COMPONENT VIDEO 1 IN

AMP connect COMPONENT MONITOR OUT direct to the Plasma

Look on pages 16 and beyond in your amp manual and it's pretty clear. You need to make sure you use right sound in connects (p23) or use manual near page 91 to change defaults.

I would not run video independently to the TV. Others may (will!) have a different opinion...

More likely just retentive mate...

Figured it should be clear so downloaded the pdf of your manual. Have been a hifi / ht tragic for 20 years so know where you are just starting out.

Ok this is what I've done so far. I had the video components (Fox and dvd) feeding directly to the plasma so I haven't touched them yet.

I checked the audio cables, I had them plugged in correctly, but I needed to manually reassign the inputs as you suggested. I've done that and I'm now getting great sound from Foxtel and dvd.

The only thing missing is FTA sound, as I don't watch free to air through the dvd recorder. Would that be a simple matter of running another audio cable, this time from the plasma to the amp, or could I fix it by taking up your suggestion of running the video components via the amp?

Thanks for taking the time to download the manual and helping me. Much appreciated mate.

Video via amp or plasma is a case of how lazy you are IMHO. I prefer to only switch one input and let the amp do the work...

I assume your plasma has either stereo out or digital out and yes all you need to do is run an rca pair or digital cable back to the amp and assign it correctly. At the moment, I do that for my Kuro and watch HD via the inbuilt TV tuner. I'm guessing the Panasonic would have a digital out and think some of the HD broadcasts are in 5.1 so I'd go that route if you have the cables to do it.

Sounds like you're pretty comfortable switching TV input and Amp input so I'd stick with what you have and enjoy it.

Cheers

Yeah what I've done for now is just run the red/white cables to the amp so I can get stereo sound at least through the home theatre.

Now I've got it set up nicely thanks very much. There'll be chaos again in a few weeks when I get the IQ2 installed lol.

cheers mate.
