Enobar Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Hi, I hope that someone here might be able to help - or at least has heard of this problem before.. I've got a Samsung LA46M81BDX LCD TV (which has already been replaced once due to a faulty HDMI port) and a Panasonic SC-PT865W Home theatre system, and I can't get them to work together. When I bought my home theatre, I took it home and plugged the optical out from the telly into it, and nothing... I've tried all the settings I can think of and still nothing. So I took the system into Panasonic's service agent who couldn't find anything wrong with it, but told me that it should all run without the optical cable - just using the HDMI cable. That didn't seem right to me but I tried it anyway with no success. I went back to my original set up which is: Optical out from TV into a multi optical cable switch thingo - along with a PS3 and Linksys Media Extender connected to the inputs. The output is connected to the Panasonic HT. I've also tried it with a direct connection to eliminate the switch as a problem, and tried it with different cables. All 3 devices (HT, PS3 & Media Extender) are linked via HDMI cable to the TV. So I had the Samsung service people out yesterday to look at the television. They replaced the Optical Sound Board and it still doesn't work! The tv will send sound out when its on an analogue channel, but not when its on ether an SD or an HD channel. The guy who came out rang back to the office and whoever he spoke to said that my model TV can not give digital sound out through the optical port, only analogue. Again that sounded totally wrong to me so we rang the Samsung people who said that it is capable of digital sound out. So another call back to TCS (the service agents) and that technician again insisted that this model can't do digital sound out and that he has seen about 5 other people with the same issue. Just to confuse the situation, I was watching something on the Media Extender last night and accidentally changed the input on the optical cable switch to the TV instead of the Extender, and still had sound! So the TV must be taking sound from the HDMI cable and outputing it through optical output even though it wont put TV sound through the port! AAAAARRRRGHGHGH! The guy from Samsung is supposed to be connecting up a TV to check it sometime during the week and will call back TCS, but I might not hold my breath.... So, can someone with the same TV confirm that they are using optical out to a HT system? Also my HT seems to be giving a sound out of the speakers which the TCS guy suggested sounds like interference from something - anyone got any tricks to fix that? Cheers, Liam.
Shonky* Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Panasonic service centre are either idiots or didn't understand you. HDMI is basically one way, so HDMI from the Panasonic to the TV will only pass audio from the DVD to the TV. If you want to listen to the TV audio via the Panasonic, you need the optical connection from the TV output to the Panasonic - you are correct there. The optical output should NOT work at all on an analogue channel only on the digital channels. Some TVs will output the audio from the HDMI through the optical sometimes. It's generally only 2.0 from what I've heard. Go back to basics. TV on a digital channel, optical cable from it to the Panasonic, ensure the Panasonic is on the right "input"
mikeed1111 Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 You need to make sure you have selected the optical in on the reciever. You need to press the Ext-In button on the remote next to number 3 until it says D-in on the front (Digital In). then it should come through

I have tried the Receiver on both D-In and Aux, neither of which work. The update on the issue is that Samsung are ordering in another optical board which they have tested first and they will try again.... Its turning into quite the saga...
