A few days ago I was playing around with my AWA STB-232 and had to set it back to the factory default settings, which required me to re-tune it. No big deal, usually. Anyway, it tuned in 7, WIN, 10 and SBS without any trouble, as well as SBS Radio 1 and 2. However, using the auto scan, it will not tune in the ABC. I have no idea why, because if I tune in the ABC using the channel scan, and putting in the frequency that the ABC transmits on here (205.625 Mhz), it picks up all the ABC channels fine. However, then I lose the other channels. Despite the fact that I'm using rabbitears, I get perfect reception on all channels, so I can't see that being the issue, but if I need to I may be able to arrange access to an external antenna. I'd prefer to not have to do that though, if possible. Anyone got any other ideas? I don't watch the ABC that much, but still, its always good to have it.

Thanks in advance.

cyclops25503,

Couple of things wrong here:

"Rabbit ears" and "AWA-STB232".

Disregarding my reasons for saying that, when you do a manual tune, (and I am not sure about this model of set top box, as I won't touch them).

Is there an option to "Replace" or "Append" in the manual tune section?

If you have a choice, change to "Append", as "Replace" will replace all data with the current tuned channel only. "Append" will add the currently tuned channel to the others already existing.

You will need to tune all channels manually, it sounds like you are able to do this.

Thanks AlanH and M'bozo. I had a look at your thread there, actually that was the first thing I looked at when I started having trouble. Since our nearest transmitter uses vertical polarisation for all channels, I've got the antenna mounted vertically - if you want I can get a photo of how I've got it mounted. I just find it strange that despite the fact that I get perfect reception using this setup on all channels (including all ABC channels when I tune it in), it won't find the ABC when doing the auto scan.

Sadly, no, there's no option to "Replace" or "Append" anywhere in the STB's setup menu, nor does the manual mention anything about it. To be honest, while its not a very high end box, I'm fairly satisfied with it for the price I paid, I'm a starving student, so its really the best I can afford for the amount of telly I watch, and lets face it, it still beats the hell out of watching analog........

maybe when you auto scan, the STB doesn't stay on each frequency for long, meaning that it will/may miss weak/intermittent/too strong signals, where as when you manually scan, it stays on the frequency for longer meaning and finds it due to the signal only just getting above/below the cliff allowing the information to be decoded.

I believe that your ABC Signal is either too strong, or weak, with the others being just right.

This box has a poor 'quality indicator' as signal and quality are combined.

What are the relative 'strength' readings for ABC vs the rest? I think I have successfully manually scanned an additional channel on one of these, but I do not have the box any more to test.

AWA customer support is excellent ....... if the box is still under warranty. There may be a factory upgrade for this problem, however it will have to go to the 'factory'.

Can you add all the channels manually perhaps?

All,

If you look at my Qld transmitter list, the Wide Bay ABWQ9A transmitter has a 125 kHz offset, however the band 3 transmitters are vertically polarised and the SBS28 is horizontally polarised.

Ah ha.

The AWA STB-232 will not auto tune Ch 9a (ABC) see Wide Bay transmitter channel list from the ACMA database.

It needs a factory firmware load.

Call AWA, as suggested previously, and they will fix it free of charge courier from and to the door.

Guaranteed. :)
