Okay am going for some in-ceiling rears, just wondering if any particular brand is better known for these than others?

So far have heard Krix and Nile, both sounded good with maybe the Nile being a bit better as they can be directed.

Your thoughts?

I've heard the Krix atmospherix and was quite impressed; actually bought a pair for myself but had to take them back as there was insufficient roof space to fit 1 of them. They come with a built in back box which I think is an advantage. They also have pivoting tweeters if thats what you mean by directional.

They need 190mm of clearance in the roof space from memory. :)

Ah! So the Krix ARE directional (tweeters) ?

I thought they weren't.

Shouldve looked at my blog pics you wouldve seen that the tweeters are directional! ;)

The Triads are nice but you would wanna have some serious kit up front to justify the price. Perhaps if you specified a budget the answer might be more grounded to it.

That's too bad Cooksta :(

You should have said - I could have helped you build a bulkhead to accommodate surround goodness ;)

Maybe next time...

Am willing to pay around $500 a pair, need two pairs.

Got Krix Symphonix, Centrix and Seismix up front.

Then in my (biased) opinion you cant go wrong with the Krix. Funningly enough a lot of the new Yamaha (YMA) in-ceilings are also very nice, although they are open-back designs.

I use Jamo and have been pleased with them, although i didnt audition anything else to be honest... they seem to provide a nice dispersed soundfield which is good

How much are the Focals?
How long is a piece of string.

I suspect, as much as you want to pay. Franin spent 3 times as much as me.

Why was there a budgetary constraint that I missed?

Ooops, missed post #9.

Might be more than $500.

I think mine were just under $1K but with the dollar where it is today that might be negotiable.

I've got niles & am happy with them. They are the 8" variety with directional tweeters and switchable 4 or 8ohm resistance. A tip - back them with rockwool or similar sound/insulation batts.

What did you pay for the Niles?

The title of this thread is 'best' not 'cheapest'.

Not meaning to be pedantic but .....

Apologies.

Seeing as people have given good feedback on the two brands I mentioned I was looking at I was hoping those same people could give me an idea of the price they paid...didn't seem worthy of a new thread?

I really appreciate these forums and the kind people who frequently help me out.

Well both Franin and I can vouch for the Focal range. And they have pointable tweeters.

Speakercraft have some, I believe the TIME series, that drop down from the ceiling and then automatically rotate to a pre-set (by you) position and angle to the listening area. I have not heard them myself but report are that they are pretty bloody good for the $$. They obviously retract back up into the ceiling when not in use. They range in price from $799 EACH to around the $1600 each.

I think 50% off would be an ambitious expectation.

I'm surprised the OP doesn't just get the atmospherix to match the rest of his system... As he is running an otherwise entirely Krix setup why would you look any further?
