HEy all

Well over thast few weeks i have been considering upgrading the movie playability, not just for a better picture , but more so for a move to a player i wont have to worry about replacing, or being able to replace...Yes the life of the XE1 still knaws at me, and what to do with nearly 100HD DVDs if it died...

So my thoughts after having a quick read around is that the new Oppo is the bees knees as far as upscaling, and picture quality goes, I also cant see blu ray going anywere in the forseeable future, so may be a safe bet...

I figure that if i can unload my XE1 and most of my disks i should be able to cover most of the costs of getting a new player...or two..

I have given up teh love affair with the XE1 and am now trying to just make logical choices, and to be a bit future proofed...

I know Blu is still mostly unfinished, so not urgent to jump back into HD, but it might be hard to resisit...now i have tasted the candy..

So good idea?, is the oppo really the bomb, or will I wait and get an LX71, in a few months?

yeah I called it quits on hddvd early up. didtn see the sense of keepign the discs and a player that might die one day for a no longer supported format :) on the other hand know hteres people out there quite happy hanging onto their player and a whole stack of discs that will keep them busy for a while.

re the oppo. if you know someone who has the player a good way to go would be to get them to bring it over so you can try on your display to see if the benefit is worth the expense of buying one. it didnt work out for me on my display, there was no point kidding myself keeping it. its definitely a good dvd plaeyr though. and never know for you it might jsut be the thing :)

re blu-ray. if you can wait by all means do. all it will mean is the prices jsut keep dropping, the players jsut keep getting better :)

Thanks al

Hmm as several other have mentioned i do have some 400+ SD dvds, so somthing that upscales would be great, The wife and I have not commented on how crappy a movie looks in a long while..

As for a borrow and see.....no one sells oppo for about 400km i think

Re: display i only have an old Pioner 43 inch plasma, you know the one caught somewere between 720 and 1080i, i think its 775??? something odd anyways. But having said that the XE1 picture , in upscaled or a HD is very noticably better, huge even. BUT if i was to unload it now seems like a good time, befor it no longer has any benefits to keeping it.... As for the cheap movies... Blu will get cheaper, can get in oz for cost ( maybe a $5-10 saving depending on titles)

Not too worried to wait for a blu player, would prefer to wait a bit and get something that does a great allround job, almost considered teh lG Blu HD player, but have been Fd over by lg in the past...having said that i am currently typing on one lol...

Pioneer's 43" glass was unusual in that it had rectangular pixels in a 4:3 ratio: 1024 x 768, whereas the 50" glass had the regular square pixels in a 16:9 ratio: 1366 (or 1365 - can't remember the rounding) x 768. Regardless, the 43" panel will still benefit from superior upscaling than that it is capable of internally, but of course, viewing distance will similarly influence the usefullness of better or worse scaling on a 43" display.

We certainly noticed the superior scaling of a Panasonic S97 (Faroudja DCDi) on our old 43" Pioneer, from a viewing distance of about 3m.

yep agree MM, we noticed a huge difference on the panel from the XE1, i think the upscaling qualities of the panel would be pretty average. Our viewing distance is about 2.6m so close enough to get a benefit.
