Shonky* Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 (edited) I've been told that plasma's loose their brightness over time, do LCD's have the same issue? Yes but in a different manner of course. The current LCDs available in Australia usually use a CCFL, which over time will lose brightness resulting in a fading picture. Theoretically it's replaceable (unlike a plasma panel's pixels) but in reality you would just buy a new TV. It should last 10 or 20 years easily. The newer LED backlit LCDs will have a limited lifetime also. However they shouldn't really fade - the LEDs would generally just fail resulting in parts of the screen not working. Or is that longer than standard globes but not longer than CCFLs?
Liamh80 Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 I thought LEDs had long life times? Or is that longer than standard globes but not longer than CCFLs? Yes. LED's are brighter and use less power than Globes, hence their widespread usage in gadgets, however CCFL's have a long life span also - the differentiation in this case may be power consumption. Liam.
Falken Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 According to the information provide by manufactures, Plasma last for 20,000 - 30,000 hours and LCD's backlight life are 60,000 hours, of course is depending now you use it. But Plasma's prices is much cheaper for large size (46' over), and for movies Plasma got better picture image than LCD. LCD's technology are using Red, green, Blue pixels and backlight tp display the image on the screen, plasma can show all viewable colours. However for video gaming personally I wiill choose LCD because the plasma's panel will blur when pause the picture image for a period of time, and noormally on video games you have more chance to stay on the same screen for a while.
kulfi Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I've been told that plasma's loose their brightness over time, do LCD's have the same issue? Yes. The rated life (actually, it should be half-life) of a TV is listed as the number of hours that it takes for the brightness to decay to half the amount it had when it left the factory. For plasmas, this is around 20000 to 30000 hours. For LCDs, it is around 60000 hours. If you take an average of 6 hours viewing per day, it should lose 2190 hours per year. With that, the average plasma should last for at least 10 years. The LCD should last for 20 years. It is likely that these TVs will develop other faults and end up in landfill before the brightness goes to 50%.
Jamie88 Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 Well as long as it lasts 4 years or so until Australia gets it arse into gear with HD then im happy
BribieG Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Plasma got better picture image than LCD. LCD's technology are using Red, green, Blue pixels and backlight tp display the image on the screen, plasma can show all viewable colours. Do some research mate. Plasma uses red green and blue phosphors and LCD can display just as many viewable colours. Where do you get that information from? Kindly explain "plasma got (not correct English) better picture quality." Suggest: "Plasma has"... or even "Plasma has got" (not perfectly gramatical but acceptable). Not trying to be insulting or even racist, but I would be the first person to accept that if I were contributing to, say, a forum in Turkey I would need to brush up on my Turkish so as not to irritate the other members. Cheers
