Arry74 Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Hi Guys I am thinking of putting up a cheap Plasma or LCD for Outdoors. I have an outdoor spa and over the spa is a bali style thatched Gazebo. I was thinking of hanging a tv underneath the gazebo. I just want a cheap one as it will be outside. I would also like to waterproof it to some degree if possible? Any ideas?, suggestions etc? Many thanks
pneu Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 What's your idea of cheap? $499 Soniq 32" SD plasma $799 Soniq 42" SD plasma $799 Conia 42" HD plasma $1000 Panasonic 42" HD plasma last years model $1500 Soniq 50" HD plasma $1700 LG 50" HD plasma $1800 Panasonic 50" HD plasma I have little knowledge of LCD prices but you could bet they'd be more than the equivalent plasmas, roughly 1.5x the price.
Mining Man Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Daytime viewing outdoors would almost eliminate plasma as an option, even in the shade. Check out your local pub for outdoor flatscreen installation ideas.
C_Clancy Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 (edited) Kogan has some low priced LCD TVs - e.g. 48 cm (19 in) - $449; 55 cm (22 in) - $599 (Both with built in DVD player and SD Tuner) 48 cm (19 in) - $319; 55 cm (22 in) - $389 (Both with analogue tuners only) Add 8.25% for metro delivery. OakenShield1 Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Agree with MM Gotta be a LCD Glare would kill the plasma. NEC do LCD's fairly cheaply I think As for waterproof, they aren't Cheap And the LCD's need to breathe, so I would go cheap, and if it fails, you haven't lost as much
Aloysius Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Recently bought a 22' Teac LCD HD display SD tuner, inbuilt DVD. Works just fine doing double duty as monitor for PC and as DTV, DVD in the Camper van when away - $699. As for weather proofing: a cabinet or box that covers top, sides and back should do the business - or take it out there when you need it - not heavy to move - lighter than an esky full of liquid refreshments Just put up a shelf with antenna and power outlets adjacent.
Arry74 Posted June 16, 2008 Author Posted June 16, 2008 Thanks for all of the responses guys. The most expensive part I guess would probably be cabling etc. I have power out there but no antenna etc I have had a look at proper outdoor tv's but they are hell expensive
Falken Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 I recommand get it from JB hifi becasue of their Varieties of LCD Brands and cheap extended warranty. There are some LCD in pretty good prices: Hisense 32' LCD TV - $896 (1366x768, 3 HDMI, HD Tuner), properly the best choice Palsonic 26' LCD TV - $699 (1366x768, 1 HDMI, HD Tuner), standard HD resolution Sonic LCD TV - JB Hifi own brand, fair price with the quality However I suggest you purchase a LCD TV with built in DVD player, it would be more suitable for outdoor. For cable, buy it from ebay or computer shops (lots of located at Auburn) if you want a cheap price of the long length cables.
Arry74 Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 I have been thinking about it and the TV is the least of my worries. Ie it would be housed under a thatched Gazebo such as this Gazebo PIC Any ideas on how to mount it, how to weatherproof it etc. I have power nearby but no antenna. Would I have to run cable or can I wirlessly send a signal somehow with one of those indoor ones. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated
Falken Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Normally it should be no TVs are suitable for outdoor use as I know (even CRT Monitors). They are all electronics equipments so it not got to be waterproof or wealtherproof. For business use the company will put plastic materials cover the whole TV, example like the screen at the train stations. But with the labour cost it was impossible for home use. So if you really want one for outdoor may be the ones selling in Big W or Target are more suitable for your needs. The brand AWA or Sanyo are cost less and replacement would be cheaper than others.
