wazh Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 (edited) Hey All, I picked up the above receiver last week on the suggestion of the HN guy. Good AV however somethings that I am missing from my previous system that I really want. One of those appears to be label changing. I have about 9 things plugged into the amp and its causing the wife no end of problems trying to figure out what system she is on. Also not a big fan on the information being displayed on the LCD. A little better information about the picture and sound would of been great. So things I am looking for 4 HDMI Inputs 1080P upscaling on all inputs Label Changing on system (if on remote as well that would be great) Auto Decode (I hear some systems dont do it) More than 2 optical inputs. Anyway this is brief. Was looking at the Yamaha 3800 and the Pioneer Lx70 and the bigger 875 in the Onkyo range. Someone mentioned that the Yamaha 3800 doesnt upscale on the HDMI inputs?! Any help would be appreciated. Edited June 14, 2008 by wazh

You should be able to change the name of the inputs via the menu options under Source setup and then Name Edit and under Miscellaneous setup under OSD setup you can select it so it displays the information on screen i can do this on my 805 and i cant see why you cant do it on your 606 as its pretty basic features. If u want more then 2 optical inputs and 1080p scaling youll need to upgrade to the onkyo 875 mate at the very least.
Shonky* Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 "... would have been great" So you're willing to ditch the 606 straight away? A 805/705 (only 3 HDMI) can definitely do the labelling. Receiver upscaling is somewhat overrated IMO. You're also probably going to double your purchase price for a fairly small feature IMO. You want to do that? Logitech remote perhaps?

This is actually what I thought initially and the 605 appears to have it as well. However the 606 is missing the 3rd option in the menu. Interesting on the Onkyo site it does make reference to the fact that the 606 doesnt have this functionality.

I did actually consider the Logitech remote. However I think the main problem stems from at a quick glance you are unable to determine what device you are on by referring to the AV. Of course I can see CBL or GAME etc but this bears very little reference to what device you are actually using. I do agree that it is a small feature however its one that has caused no end of trouble. In the end I want to make sure that I have an AV I am going to be happy with long term into the future. If I need to go and spend more cash then so be it. Sounds like you guys think I should stick with the 606 and maybe train the wife a little better
50mxe20 Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Sounds like you guys think I should stick with the 606 and maybe train the wife a little better Is that possible. How is it done.
wazh Posted June 14, 2008 Author Posted June 14, 2008 Is that possible. How is it done. This is where the dilemma is. Its better to go and spend more money and keep her happy rather than trying to train.
wazh Posted June 14, 2008 Author Posted June 14, 2008 Logitech remote perhaps? Did a little more looking at the Logitech Remote and I think this is definately the way to go for at least having the informatin available from the remote. However if I am able to label the receiver as well this would be a big plus. The problem is as well that my old Sony did labeling and its very hard to explain to the wife who sees the visual aspect that how we have lost functionality. At this stage if I change my mind quickly I can still get it back to HN and get another model.
suparockin Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 The Yamaha 3800 would do all that according to my research?
