robbie! Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 I am looking for speakers below $1k to match an Onkyo TX-SR606 HTS receiver. Any recommendations from members appreciated. Seen JB have the following speakers for that price range http://www.digitalhome.com.au/Tvs_And_Home...Subwoofer/24226 http://www.digitalhome.com.au/Tvs_And_Home...aker_Pack/21947 http://www.digitalhome.com.au/Tvs_And_Home...aker_Pack/21948 Are these suitable. Which are better speakers, Wharfedale or Jamo. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
Juicester Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 the only advice i will add, is that when i had 1k to spend on speakers, i wish i'd bought a good PAIR rather than an average set of 5.1. You can add more later - but you can't 'polish a turd' - as mark would say. Buy yourself a decent pair for around the 1k mark and add more when you have the money. You have a pretty decent reciever, and those speakers you linked wouldnt do it justice in my opinion.

FWIW I got my Krix pheonix floorstander's for the 1k mark, and by most accounts they get good reviews and krix have a nice range of budget friendly (to a degree) options to add in to your theater setup. But there are many many other brands out there, so you should look into those as well.
dantan Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 I second jcjuice and FallenStorm's sentiments. It would be far better to start off by getting a good pair of main loudspeakers now, and then add a centre channel next, and then sub-woofer or surrounds next, and so on. For around the $1,000.00 mark (after haggling), the Krix Phoenix is the first that comes to mind, otherwise, the Monitor Audio Bronze series, the floor-standing version, the BR5 is available for around that money, and is a fantastic pair of loudspeakers, as well. In terms of which is better, Wharfedale or Jamo, unfortunately, it is not as easy as that. It is purely everyone's own opinion. Audition them yourselves and with material that you are familiar with, and whichever you prefer (and preferably audition more different loudspeaker brands), buy them, sit back, and enjoy, and try not to look back, otherwise, the upgraditis bug will get you! Dan.
quijibo Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 What exactly are you after? The 3 links provided go to different systems. The first includes a pair of floor standers, but the other two go to sets made up of subwoofer/satellite speaker combinations. If you are after a smaller set of speakers, then right now for $1k I'd reccommend the Kef 2005.2 set from eastwood hifi if they still have any left. http://www.eastwoodhifi.com.au/SPECIALS.HTM
relliksalta Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Why not look at a nice set of bookself speakers. Later on, you can use them for surrounds. A set of Monitor Audio RS1's is about the $900 mark I think. As people have said, do it once, do it right
nang3 Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 personally and yes im biased because i own them, i would go for the Dali Concept 8's which can be had for around the $1k mark... they are a nice warm sounding speaker and can really go loud if you want them to, yet have plenty of finesse at lower levels.. I listened to them with a few Jamos including the 855's IIRC and some wharfedales and everything sounded flat in comparison to the Dalis IMO
MilesAhead Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Eastwood Hifi have the Kef 2005.2 on runout special for $999, may be worh considering.

Rosco122 Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 guys some people just cant budget to spend $1k on 1 or 2 speakers. I bought 5.1 off ebay for $400 and im more than happy for now till i can afford "better" quality. In my case when i watch movies i barely get to crank the volume as the kids are asleep and i dont have a sound proofed room. I would love to go to a setup in perth with high quality speakers and hear the difference to mine. Im sure it would be better but i dont have the money to upgrade.
yamapro Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Hey Rosco, Fair points you make - and sometimes we all get a little carried away in the quest for perfection... At the same time though i think the nature of the advice is more along the lines of putting the entire budget into the best quality stereo pair of speakers one can afford as this will often result in a more satisfactory experience than a whole package... You mention that you can't often crank your system due to kids etc... i would say this is all the more reason to get as good a system as one can afford as IME as the quality goes up so to does the enjoyment of listening at all volume levels, not just the need to crank! Also - if you don't have the money to upgrade DON'T go and listen to a better set-up than your own. Doing exactly that is one of the reasons i never seem to have any money
robbie! Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 Thanks all for your feedback. The KEF speakers have good reviews but am I correct to say it was first release 4 years ago. Hasn't the technology of speakers changed then. Anyone one knows of any retailer where I can hear demo of these speakers in Melb.
yamapro Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Hi robbie, Speaker technology doesn't really change that much in a couple of years. For the most part they use the same materials and components that they did 10 - 20 years ago... Some of the finest speakers i have ever heard are all over ten years old now. Sure from time to time a few things get tweaked but generally the science behind the design and the components is much the same as it has been for ages. Cabinets are really what have undergone the biggest change in the last decade or so with manufacturing tech coming on leaps and bounds and CAD not to mention far East manufacturing saving lots of time and money... Sources and AVRs are what have really undergone the massive changes/quantum leaps whilst loudspeakers haven't generally come all that far...
Andre281503560612 Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 I think i pared $1250 for a Pair of Krix KDX-M and matching KDX-C center. They are in the cheaper finish but they look good in the black. Might be worth a look.
Guest TigerTribe5 Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I was on a budget also & have the Jamo A320 speakers running through an Onkyo 605 & couldn't be happier. The sound is fantastic (a huge improvement on quality over the A102s). If you buy this pack now you can enjoy the full package - now!!

I also need to get some sort of doors on the theatre room. Just have curtains at the moment. Im using PS3 -> Panasonic XR700 -> Epson TW1000 } Speakers Dreams Acoustics. All up costing $5k. I think i'll keep this system for a year or 2 and see how technology pans out in this time.
Adelaideltpc Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 How about the JAMO S 606 HCS6 package? IMO this is the best 5.1 package for the money. They can be had for around $1200 from "Hardly Normal".
