I currently have a Bravia 42" (Foxtel quality is mleh on it IMO) but am looking to replace it with something smaller this time. I have $1000-ish to spend maybe a few hundred more if I really need too. I live in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne but will need to get it delivered wherever I buy from.

-32" at most

-Full HD would be awesome since I do have a PS3 and am starting to building my Blu-ray collection. (if 1080p isnt possible then at least 720p+1080i capable)

-HDTV Tuner

- HDMI x 1 (PS3)/ Component x2 (Wii, Foxtel Box)

- good black levels.. my current one is more grey than black and it really annoys me.

I found a "Samsung Full HD 1080p 32" 81cm LCD TV model: LA32A550" for $1,299 but im not sure if that's worth it or even if thinkaudiovisual.com.au is a legit site.

Suggestions?

1080p is a waste of time on a 32" unless you are viewing at less than 2m and/or using it as a PC monitor.

$1200 sounds about right for the Samsung you mentioned.

I take it you are only considering LCD though?

Hi Cylon,

You need to do some more reading. Foxtel broadcast a bit above compressed download PQ. You can have the greatest TV in the world and foxtel will still look 'mleh'. As mentioned HD TV is about providing a decent PQ on screens above 42" in size. on screens under that HD (or 'true HD') is just a waste of money.

Im only 160cm away from the TV now (even closer when playing Wii Fit), will never need to use it for a PC monitor since my 20" iMac is directly to the right. :P

My Bravia is rear projection i really don't want the bulk of that again, then all the plasma burn in issues scare me so LCD seems like the best option for me.

Yeah im still well aware that Foxtel will still suck, im thinking it'll be better on 32" than 42" at least. Getting the best from my Blu-rays/PS3 game is my main concern.

You won't see any benefits of 1080p with at 32" monitor at 160cm. Might as well get a 768p 32". I'd definitely consider a 40" 1080p LCD which would be perfect at your distance.

Either the 40" Bravia X or one of the new Samsungs. LCD Black levels have improved since your Bravia 42" LCD Rear Pro but whether they're good enough for your eyes you'll need to audition yourself to find out.

Foxtel still won't look that flash but let me ask you, what's more important, Foxtel, or PS3/Wii/Blu-ray/FTA?

As mentioned even at 160cm 1080p provides very little return for your $. However that's easy enough for you to assess for yourself. Going smaller in size is a very smart move in effectively improving PQ. Many people are surprised how bad TV can look on there brand new huge plasma. But that's just because you're usually blowing something up past a 'good' resolution capability. As for plasma burn in that's no longer really an issue. This forum was beset by posts on the issue in the early days but these days as long as you don't run a plasma at 100% brightness for 10 hours on a paused screen you won't normally have any issue.

Anyway, you might like to consider one of the 100Hz LCD models which can especially benefit PC connections. This one caught my eye a while back:

My secondary TV is an 86cm (34”) CRT viewed from under 2 meters and Foxtel looks quite good on it, however no way is it big enough to do justice to HD or BluRay.

The main display is a 70” viewed from less then 3 meters, for HD it’s so much better its silly.

For a 1.6 meter viewing distance I would go for a 40”-42” full HD model, but you can’t have that for $1000.

or one of the new Samsungs.

LA32R81BDX ? I think thats a newer one. Have no idea where to find one of those so I haven't a clue if its in my price range.

That's one the older ones. On runout for about $900 these days. It's 768p model but at 160cm it won't matter.

The new Samsungs are prefixed with an "A" like the one you quoted.
