Well, I now have all 5.1 speakers connected to my Sony 835, and the Sharp BDHP20X sending audio through the analogue outs, but something seems amiss (again). The level I get out of the subwoofer seems to be incredibly low. After putting up the subwoofer's volume, there is barely a cough during the battle sequences in StarShip Troopers. And the level only seems to mildly vary when the subwoofer output is boosted by +2 or +5 dB in the player setup menu. Most disconcerting. Is there some sort of level bug with the BDHP20X that I did not read about? Or have I missed something else?

When using 5.1 analogs the subwoofer level needs to be boosted by 10db (speakers set to large) or 15db (speakers set to small). Look for a setting in your AVR called 'EXT IN sub level' or some thing like that.

Some AVRs do not have this feature, possible solutions are:

1. use the settings in the player (or AVR input trims) to set all full range speakers as low as possible and the subwoofer as high as possible eg speakers -6db, sub +6db.

2. Turn the volume up on the sub. The problem with this method is when you switch to another source the sub will be 15db too hot.

Hakka.

Yes set the SW boost to +15dB for the Ext In (analogue).

On my AVR I can do this for Ext In ONLY and it has no effect on anything else when I switch to other modes/inputs.

At the moment I have no way of knowing if this receiver (a Sony STR-DE835) has this setting. I have searched high and low for it so far to no avail.

I have a funny feeling that somewhere, someone is laughing at me over this.

I read the manual and I cant find anything in there either.

Maybe try one (or a combination) of the workarounds I mentioned earlier.

Hakka.

Quite possibly it doesn't. I think someone esle mentioned this awhile ago.

The better new AVR's seem to have (Yamaha Denon etc).

Can you use an SPL Meter for this +15db ? I always just set all of the speakers (inlcuding the sub-woofer) to the same db ???

I have been looking through the sound level settings on the DE400's menu... apparently there is a menu marked Level, and an SW LVL setting. I just do not know if the DE835 has an equivalent option. It is hard to tell when the actual remote for the DE835 is MIA.
