Had mine since launch (March 23 '07) and have it on at least eight hours every day. Except for browser freezes it has worked perfectly. Since upgrading HDD to 320GB W.D. I occasionally get "incorrect hard drive" message...??? I just need to turn off/on at back and it fires up fine. :D

do you store a lot of media/demos, hence you needed that much extra space?

I don't really try to store a lot on mine, but 320GB is a lot of space for basically endless storage. :o

The optical drive in mine died while my son was playing GTA4. Tried everything possible and determined it was dead. Here's the timeline that followed:

13 May: Ring Sony and tell them I need a warranty repair. They take my details and e-mail me a barcode and instructions. I take PS3 next door to post office and they pack it up and ship it off.

20 May: I ring Sony and they say that they haven't received it yet. They do some tracking and find it at an Aust Post distribution centre awaiting courier collection.

22 May: I get an e-mail from Sony confirming receipt of PS3. Who knew it took nine days to get a parcel from Brisbane to Sydney.

3 June: I ring Sony for an update and get told in no uncertain terms that normal turnaround is 15 to 20 business days and don't waste their time calling before then.

12 June: I ring Sony again and get told that it's only day 14. I say that by my calculations its day 16. They tell me there was a public holiday (my mistake) and that the day it arrives (22 May) is actually 'Day 0' and doesn't count.

Working on the theory that they will stick to the 20 business days, that means it won't leave there until 20 June. Add at least another nine days for it to come back ('at least' because it's up hill from Sydney to Brisbane) and I will have been without the PS3 for six weeks.

If I ran my business that way, I'd be out of business in no time. But then, I'm not a multi-national conglomerate like Sony.

As with FMB, my experience was very much the same.

Mine has been returned now (as of about 10am today), but it certainly wasn't a smooth experience. Sorry to say but hope that your PS3 doesn't have a problem, because Sony's service leaves a lot to be desired.

Had my PS3 replaced as it had a noisy fan.

Hey Teko,

How much noise if any does yours make now? Do you play gta4 on your new console?

adjac you had a thread that was on the playstation forums that closed right?

had my 60gb since launch hasnt moved since i set it up, no problems whatsoever.

:angry2:

So maybe I spoke too soon...

Came home today and plugged in the returned refurbished PS3.

Plays Games - Yes

Plays DVDs - Yes

Plays Bluray...

Nope, wont play any Blurays... all bought locally so it's not a region problem with the discs, and the same movies worked in the ps3 I had returned... just get "This disc is invalid (80029903)".

After 30mins on the phone to sony support again I've got another case number and it's going back once again. Apparently it will be fast tracked, but when I asked what that meant and what the turn around time was, they said it was still "20-25 days" so it's no different to any normal repair.

So what can I say... obviously not happy Jan!

Yeah sure did. Dont think they liked the topic. Some excuse about it would cause arguments between members. Funny how i havent seen anyone in this thread say one bad thing about another member. There is one guy on there that has had his ps3 replaced 4 times. There are alot of peeved people in there technical forum.

Just a snippet of one topic:

QUOTE(king_nothing6 @ Jun 11 2008, 08:28 PM)

looks like im just one of many, my 40gig ps3 just stopped playing any disks too, was halfway thru a mission on gta IV and it frooze then the machine reset it self after a little time, now nothing will play.

how long will this issue be ignored? i mean there are 19 cases in this topic alone, not counting those who have had it happen more than once.

im going to have to call sony tomorrow now, i have a few days off this week that i was planning to increase my iv online stats now what do i do!

According to scee and their employees, we must all be seeing things. "There is no problem. If there was, there would have been a recall." Yeah Right.

Lets see, recall the product, extend the warranty..... ahh yes! Ignore the consumers and just keep sending them the broken ones we have fixed.

Its not bad luck some people have had this happen more than once or twice. Its got nothing to do with luck.

How about looking after your customers.

looks like i'll add my name to the list

came home last night and put in rambo 4 - watched for

20 minutes and it froze .... now i get the error messages

plays dvd but not bluray

trying all the reset tricks and whatever at the moment

but i'm not holding my breath for a miracle fix

not happy - $1000 launch console and it lasts 15 months

i've got a launch ps2 which has spent its life in a car

and it still works perfectly over 8 years later

Had my region A for 3 and a half months and after many freezes on Assassins creed and GTA4 it has now stopped reading any discs, gotta send it all the way back to HK, i'm screwed. Who the hell would have thought a $700 machine would break down within 6 months.

To make things worse my 360 got the RROD, just waiting for the wii to explode on me or something now.

At least you know your xbox 360 is covered by a THREE year warranty.

I really believe it's about time Sony started to acknowledge this Disk Read Error problem, and at least increase their warranty period. $700 for a console that is prone to these incidents is just not acceptable.

I operate a video/game rental store in a (very?) small country town. Being the only place in town that you can get games, I'm fairly up to date with who has what, and the problems that have arisen. There are approximately 7 PS3's in town, and around 9 360's. Of these, I know of 3 PS3's that have died already (one was a launch console a week out of warranty), but not a single 360 console. The last guy to buy a next gen console was a die-hard Playstation fan, and because of these problems, and the fact there is a longer warranty on the 360 for the RRoD, he put his money down on a new 360. The guy that lost his a week out of warranty, is verging on buying a 360 too. He laid down $1000 for a console that lasted him 53 weeks.

The longer Sony ignore the issue, and carry on their abysmal turnaround time, the more detrimental it's going to be for them. I get asked 'PS3 or 360' all the time at the shop, and I have to be honest about the situation... if you are after a game console today, the 360 is the better option thanks to the game range and the extended warranty.

Your evidence for failures is based on a very small sample size. Feedback from retailers and repairs Australia wide on PS3 failures is in the order of 3-5% and substantially less than 360.

Hmm... my personal experience of failures is a very small sample, agreed. A simple visit to various forums will show the failure rate to be significant enough to be of concern. Where/what is your evidence that it is 3-5%? If that were truly the case, then you'd think the forums would be an awful lot quieter than they are.

Extended warranty would show that sony are willing to stand behind there product rather than what they are doing now which is just loseing them life long playstation and sony fans.

Its not wether the fail rate is more or less than xbox, it is about looking after the customer and Sony standing by their product.

40 GB Aus model and no problems so far. I've had the fan go into noisy mode once in that time but shutting it down and moving it back from the wall stopped it.

All this talk of read errors is concerning. The main reason I never considered an XB360 is that living in a remote region, reliability is very important to me. Fingers crossed.
