I am considering using two identical subs with an Onkyo amp (which I haven't purchased yet) that has 7.1 out. How does one go about doing this? Is a Y cable sufficient (with the single end connected to the amp and each ends of the Y going to a sub) or is it preferred solution to just buy an amp with 7.2 channels (say a yammy)?

Are their any advantages/disadvantages of going either way?

Subs will be DIY and each sub will have it's own plate amp installed.

I use a very basic Y-cable that I bought from JB HiFi. It's well built (made by Sony) but it's from their car audio parts not HT. Makes no difference in the performance but it does make a difference when you're trying to find it in the shop. I run the Y adapter from the amp then into two RCA cables to the plate amp. My SVS subs have just the one input and they work fine with this arrangement.
