lizclinton Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 (edited) In town on business at the moment and did a scan on my digital radio last night to find that Sydney's DAB services have moved from 9a to channel 13. Does this mean that all DAB services will be be on channel 13 nationally instead of the planned 9a and 12 for Hobart or is this just a Sydney only trial of channel 13? alanh Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Liz, The ACMA has been trying to get the Defence Department to release their allocation of 230 - 240 MHz. It must have been successful? AlanH

AlanH I hope so Alan. channel 13 will be a much better option for a national DAB network. There are two blocks of six stations being broadcast here called "3G service" 1 to 6. Any thoughts about what they may be?
alanh Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Liz, Are these transmissions in DAB+ or DAB? What programs streams are they transmitting? Channel Frequency 13A 230.784 MHz 13B 232.496 MHz 13C 234.208 MHz 13D 235.920 MHz 13E 237.632 MHz 13F 239.344 MHz Each of these channels is capable of carrying 9 DAB+ programs each The top edge of channel 13F is 240 MHz which is top of the internationals DAB Band. So it looks as if this is a test just outside the band. AlanH
lizclinton Posted June 12, 2008 Author Posted June 12, 2008 They were on 13C and seemed to be DAB+. I recorded some and them transfered to my laptop but no player I have used can understand the file. Today everything is off air except for 4 DAB streams on 1483.77Mhz.
alanh Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Liz, 1,483.776 MHz is interesting because this is channel LS which is in the centre of the satellite DAB band. AlanH

lizclinton Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 Have you tried VLC? Yes have been using VLC. My DAB radio labels all recordings MP2 and I was wondering if this could be causing problems?

AlanH Still only have 2DAY, MIX FM, 2KY, ABC Classic, on 1483.77 this morning from North Sydney I think because I was out in the West yesterday and nothing scanned up at all.
DrP Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Yes have been using VLC. My DAB radio labels all recordings MP2 and I was wondering if this could be causing problems? Can your DAB software produce a transport stream dump?
alanh Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Liz, There has been an L band trial going from that site for nearly as long as the one from Willoughby. AlanH
lizclinton Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 Can your DAB software produce a transport stream dump? No I,m using the record feature on a Pure DAB2000 radio that records what I assume is program steam onto a SD card.
lizclinton Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 Liz,There has been an L band trial going from that site for nearly as long as the one from Willoughby. AlanH Yes there was also an L band test transmitter on the same frequency at Parramatta but thats looks like if off air now. Still no DAB of any kind on VHF this afternoon.
wiseguy84 Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Alanh, I believe they are still in the process of getting 230-240 from the military. One of the problems is that 243MHz is still in use as an emergeny distress frequency, which is usually transmitted from low powered EPIRBS etc.(this is to be phased out by 1st Feb 2009) Having an adjacent high powered transmission can cause problems if not done properly and carefully.

blairy Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 My DAB radio stopped working a few weeks ago...unable to tune any stations. Just did a full rescan and it scans 9a. I'm out near Penrith (western sydney) using my tv antenna for reception. Is it possible to get channel 13? blairy
lizclinton Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 What frequency does it say the broadcasts are on? I noticed last week that the broadcasts on 13 are still labelled 9a, b, c MUX.
tamago_otoko Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Where can you get a DAB+ radio? They're not exactly commercially available yet
alanh Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 tamago_otoko, I don't know if the Melbourne test broadcasts are in DAB+ yet. Broadcast Australia is running that test. It is unlikely that receivers will be available here much before 1 st Jan next year when transmissions start for real. AlanH
blairy Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 What frequency does it say the broadcasts are on? I noticed last week that the broadcasts on 13 are still labelled 9a, b, c MUX. I'm using a Sangean DDR3. Full auto tune reports 19 stations on Sydney Mux 1 9a. When I select a station it's Not Available. To be honest I'm not sure if that really answers the question. Just did a full reset which invokes quick auto tune - no DAB signal. Then did a full auto tune and on Sydny Mux1 9a I pick up four stations - ABC Classic; Mix FM; 2Day and 2KY. Guess this reflects the winding back of DAB for the impending launch of DABPlus. cheers blairy
lizclinton Posted June 19, 2008 Author Posted June 19, 2008 Sounds like like most of the services are back up again. I have found with my DAB radio that it will scan up the new DAB+ stations but can not decode them. I,m back in Slow-bart now so cant take a look for myself but it would be interesting to know if channel 13 is going to be a permanent home for DAB. I will give Digital radio australia a call today and see if I can get anything out of them.
alanh Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Liz, It is the ACMA which allocates the frequencies to all stations. I would ask them. I suspect that channel 9A - 9C is much more likely except for Hobart which already has TV on TV channel 9A. So Hobart will be on channel 12A & B AlanH
