It occurred to me the other day that I don't own a radio anymore (apart from the one in the car which is pretty crappy, a blot on the otherwise excellent Mazda 2). I subscribe to Podcasts and listen to them on the train but no longer have a domestic radio set since the old Lucky Goldstar ghetto blaster died about 2 years ago. The crunch point came when I wanted to catch up with the latest ABC Science Show and listen to it as I did some housework. I resorted to dowloading the podcast, transferring it to a stick which I plugged into the USB port on my PHILIPS DVD player and listened to it on the tv via HDMI.

I thought "This is frgn RIDICULOUS" Anyone from the 1930s watching me on their time scope would be rolling on the floor laughing at me

:lol::lol:

Haven't been to an electrical store yet but:

What do radios look like nowadays? I'm thinking of just a tuner unit that can sit in a stack with my stb, dvd player etc.

Do they generally come with composite red/white sockets so I can plug it into my 5.1 ?

Do they come with remotes?

Where do you buy them?

How much do they cost?

I actually don't have a tuner.

Although, a few years ago, I bought a Sony Radio/Clock ICF-C1200 locally; as I travel around a bit.

As it 's battery operated and has the AM band, it came in handy, listening to the emergency broadcasts when there was no power for three days.

Like you, these days, I mainly d/load podcasts, and transfer them to the mobile phone, which is also a MP3 player

I 've been reluctant to purchase a decent tuner with digitial radio on the horizon.

What about live streaming via the PC to your current system?

We'd use this method to listen to the J's and Nova in NZ. Used to get all teary hearing the traffic reports...

Or one of the Denons 3808 or 4308 amps (maybe even the newer ones)? It has Internet radio and IIRC a radio tuner as well...

Yes, my reception of the local RN AM service is not the best

and I listen to it, from to time to time, online.

I'm sure when wireless broadband connection becomes much cheaper, you'll see a lot more web-enabled mobile devices hit the market.

Actually that's thinking outside the box ... I just tried the j's and it sounds fine (on my 2.1 attached to the pc). I don't know If I've done the calculations right but it looks to be pulling around 30 mb an hour, so that's not going to break the gigabyte bank too badly :) . I could just use the Mrs Laptop, which I am already using for :ninja: Channel BT :ninja: materials so it lives next to the main TV anyway. I wonder if Windows Media Player is able to store the various radio stations in a 'playlist' and connect to each one as required? I'll give that a try with a couple of stations.

Quite a lot of mobile phones have FM tuners inbuilt as well.

I'd probably hold off buying a radio until cheaper digital versions arrive. I also stream stuff from the internet to my Amp, PC and ipod -all works well.

Yes indeed. My Sony-Ericsson Walkman phone has a great little FM tuner that I listen to via good-quality headphones when I wake up early. I used it a lot during a recent sojourn in hospital, as sleeping was difficult. It's also good when travelling -- some great jazz stations in Europe.

Feed this into an amplifier, and you have the equivalent of a top-noch FM tuner or receiver.
