Skid_MacMarx Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 a bit of fun. . . Based on a radio programme Desert Island Discs is a long-running BBC Radio 4 programme. It was first broadcast on January 29, 1942 and is said by the Guinness Book of Records to be the longest-running music programme in the history of radio. Guests are invited to imagine themselves castaways on a desert island, and to choose eight pieces of music to take with them; discussion of their choices permits a review of their life... What albums would you take with you? Choose only eight... To start the ball rolling here are my eight: 1, Miles Davis — Kind of Blue 2, Pink Floyd — The Wall 3, Gang of Four — Entertainment 4, Ralph Towner/Gary Peacock — Oracle 5, Volodos — Schubert: Piano works 6, Stephan Micus — Twilight Fields 7, David Sylvian/Robert Fripp — The First Day 8, Hunters & Collectors

gone_bush Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Firstly, 1) Grieg - Peer Gynt 2) Strauss - anything/everything 3) - 8) ? (I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure) But now for another (un)related question. Whilst lazing on said desert island listening to our favourite music, it might also be nice to have something to read. At the end of H. G. Well's "Time Machine" it is noticed that three books are missing from the bookshelves. One of the characters (Filby) enquires: "Which three books would you have taken?" (to rebuild a future civilisation). So, along with your 8 cds/records/..., what three books would you take to enjoy along with your music?

George Orwell's 1984 & Animal Farm (that should keep things right ) Anything from Denis Wheately, that will help with language and manners.
hobotivo Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 George Orwell's 1984 & Animal Farm (that should keep things right )Anything from Denis Wheately, that will help with language and manners. Dennis Wheatley, I thought I was the only one who remebered him... I used to love his Black Magic stories, and they were turned into some pretty good Hammer Horror movies. Always had a few scantily clad maidens getting sacrificed. Great when one was a 16 year old boy! But if we get 3 books I'd better add two more to Catch 22, so I'll have Aztec by Garry Jennings and The Magus (the updated edition) by John Fowles. Cheers Ron
dax Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 8 cds... thought it would be easy but so many to choose from and some bands Id want 2 probably have to toss a coin to select between these pairs to get just 1 from each band - mostly these are choosing between songs I like more on albums with weaker songs compared to a better allround album. Damn it! Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast Iron Maiden - Piece Of Mind Metallica - Ride The Lightning Metallica - Master Of Puppets Iced Earth - Dark Saga Iced Earth - Something Wicked Then Megadeth I definitely need Megadeth - Rust In Peace But then Id also need at least one of either... Megadeth - Peace Sells Megadeth - Cryptic Writings Hmm - so thats 5 after some coin tosses and now Im starting to struggle as there is so much Id miss... GunsnRoses - Appetite For Destruction Bruce Dickinson - Accident Of Birth Black Sabbath - Paranoid And to show its not all metal Nirvana - Nevermind Midnight Oil - 10..1 Billy Idol - Rebel Yell Oh damn it all. Ill just take Rust In Peace!!! Thats the only album I definitely couldnt live without.

gone_bush Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Neville Shute was another great author from a time long gone. Agreed! His autobiography "Slide Rule" is a must read. If you're into aeronautics and its history (I'm not) you'll read it in one session. BTW: His real name was Neville Shute Norway.

Sullo Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 This might be a bit off topic but I can't seem to start a new thread because I'm a new member. I'm currently researching options for new speakers. It will be fronts at first because I listen to music a lot more than movies etc. I realise when testing speakers I should listen to music I'm familiar with but are there any particular tracks that are good to test out speakers? Oh, here's my desert island discs which gives a good idea of what I listen to: 1. U2 - Achtung Baby 2. U2 - Joshua Tree 3. Muse - Origin of Symmetry 4. Radiohead - OK Computer 5. Sigur Ros - Takk 6. Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head 7. Fatboy Slim - You've Come A Long Way Baby 8. Dandy Warhols - Come Down
