I have recently bought a new Yamaha 3800 receiver after toying with adding power amps

to an old HKardon receiver.

Could anyone with first hand experience tell me how far I can go with USB storage devices

through it's front port. I know it will only accept mp3's and .wav files.

On avsforum and in the manual it says " the drive must be fat32. the manual also states

that it will only recognize up to 8 directories or folders with 500 files in each. "

I have loaded a Sandisk Cruzer 8gb flash drive with about 25 albums. It's fat 32

Filed in folders as

eg. Counting Crows ---> August & Everything

------> 01 Round Here

02 Omaha

03 etc etc

Most artists just have one album hanging off it, but some have 2.

Everything is working sweet and more than happy with the sound for casual listing.

I'm unsure of the structure of fat 32 drives, I think the 32 refer's to partions of 32 gb

In saying that I do know that WD My Book External drives are partitioned as fat 32

and they are 500gb --> 1tb

At what stage, on the basis of the above, would the Yamaha put it's hands up and not

recognise the drive size. So far up to what I've done , everything is sweet.

Anyone with first hand experiences , what are you using with your 3800.

(PS. I know there are better ways of getting music to the Yamaha, ie. networking

it or Squeezebox etc. Well aware of those options)

Cheers , look forward to the replies

OK , hey I don't mind answering my own thread. It is a public holiday and all, I realise.....!!!

avsforum member tells me that:

" I think you could use multiple partitions but the AVR will only "see" the first partition. I've hooked up two USB drives to my 2700 without issue (500gb and 1tb). I have about 4600 songs on the USB hard drives within many sub folders, no issues. But keep in mind that the USB interface is very slow & klunky even with small USB devices. The bigger the device and the more files you are going through the slower/klunkier it will get. "

My understanding is that Windows XP has no limitations on viewing a large fat32 drive like a WD My Book.

It's limit of 32gb comes with if XP had to actually do the partitioning itself, which it won't. So when detached

and added to home pc , we are sweet.

So, when the external drive is then taken to RX-V3800 and attached to front USB, apart from a slow GUI interface when scrolling through 450 albums (700mb .wav each album (320gb drive)............

the USB port should work.

Right ?????

Keep us informed with any outcomes,I'm interested even if I haven't given it any thought yet.

Interested to see what you can do with it as I've not really dealt with all the features of the 3800 at all,I guess I'm lazy.. :rolleyes:
