Musketeer1503560487 Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Have any of you who already had Foxtel via Telstra bundled on 1 bill for discounts, signed up for Foxtel HD? Previously Telstra offered 5% to 10% off the whole bill if you bundled 2 or 3 services. We've been getting get 10% off all services. This amounts to $25 or $30 per month. These discounts of up to 10% no longer exist - but you get to keep it if you are already signed up. The new bundling offer is not as good. What I'm wondering is, if you are an existing Foxtel via Telstra customer and you sign up for Foxtel HD, does it reset and do you lose your legacy Telstra bundle discount?
cnrmlj Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Good question. I'm in the same category as you. I've been enjoying the 10% discount since it came in. Not an issue for me at this stage though as i won't be going to iQ2/HD until they compensate me for paying the $395 up front for my iQ about 18 months ago by either giving me some of the $395 back or wave the $10 per month for iQ2. I got a letter from telstra this week about my bigpond service and said they would be moving it to single bill with my home phone and if i don't accept this then the discount on my internet part of the bill will drop off. They said the legacy benefits will remain and they aren't (at this stage anyway) trying to take away the legacy benefits. I think they will continue to honour the discount on HD/iQ2 however.

But Telstra overcharge by about 25% when compared to proper value competitive ISP's. So you are still paying 15% too much.

No it shouldnt. Unless you move address then your unique customer ID will stay the same and your discount applied

Expensive, a litle However i have had bigpond cable for ~7 years now. In that time it has failed 2 times Once due to a network fult Once due to a car hitting a stobie pole Bet your adsl doesnt have a nearly 7 year uptime...

Hehehe - yeah well actually no. We used to have Home-Phone/Foxtel/Bigpond-Cable and early last year we dropped Bigpond Cable for iinet ADSL2+. We continue to get 10% off though just with Phone/Foxtel.
Ali AR Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 don't know about him, but i have adsl from Internode. i have been down for 2hrs in the last whole yr i had it. And the speed is as fast at the compareable Bigpond plan. yet it is cheaper then Bigpond. still i have 3 land lines with Telstra so thinking of getting Foxtel through them once the kinks in IQ2 are sorted. Expensive, a litle...... ....... Bet your adsl doesnt have a nearly 7 year uptime...

Actually, same here, ADSL from iinet has been real solid. In fact the reason I jumped from Bigpond was due to frequent connection problems with their cable service. After 6 weeks of messing around trying to get them to fix it, I just gave up and moved elsewhere.
the_wonderchild Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 we're in the same boat ourselves. Frankly, i didn't think of the possibility of losing the discount if upgrading to Foxtel HD, but now that you guys have mentioned it, i will most definitely have this thought in the back of my mind. If anyone gets a definitve answer, please post.
Musketeer1503560487 Posted June 7, 2008 Author Posted June 7, 2008 Ok here is why I asked this question. We get 10% off everything on our Telstra bill EXCEPT for one $10 amount, which goes through with no discount. This $10 is the monthly charge for Foxtel IQ. We added this more recently (late 2006). It could be that anything new added to the bill AFTER the bundling discount offer was withdrawn, gets excluded from the old discounting deal. OR it may just be a billing error and we really should get the 10% discount on everything. But I've never pursued it. If it is the former (ie anything new added gets excluded from the discount), then I'm nervous that: - Changing from Platinum to Platinum HD - Getting an IQ2 Box - Getting rid of our non-IQ box and replacing it with our current IQ1 Box will result in our Foxtel charges being considered "new" and not valid for the discount. Even worse would be if we somehow lost the old 10% discount on everything including phone charges! I really want to know how this works, so that I know the monthly $ impact when tossing up whether it is worth moving to IQ2 and HD. We already have Platinum + IQ, so I'm in no major hurry. I'll wait and see for now.
wumpster Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 I have just looked at my Telstra bill, if you lok at "your benefits" it clearly states that by combining your home phone with two other services , including paytv you are entitled to a 10% discount on all charges, you could seriously challenge any decision that would remove that discount just because you had changed to IQ2. I had the install yesterday, failed to get the pay HD channels, so I need to phone Telstra on tuedsay, I wil emphasise to them what benefits I am entitled to, and ensure that it remains the same.

I'm on the old 5% discount plan (only two services from Telstra) and don't get a discount on the iQ charge. I've always assumed that it was only intended to apply to the programming, not the hardware (and have never bothered to query it) but it could have something to do with when I added the iQ (Jan 2005), but I don't remember when the 5% and 10% discounts were withdrawn.

I think it was June 30 2004, because I remember rushing to sign up and bundle before going on holidays in June '04, as I had heard the offer was changing on July 1. That would mean your Jan'05 install was after the offer was withdrawn.
Musketeer1503560487 Posted June 23, 2008 Author Posted June 23, 2008 Well I thought I'd answer my own original question, in case others end up here wondering the same thing. It seems, taking up Foxtel IQ2 and/or HD+ should not invalidate any of your existing Telstra discounts, even if those discounts have been discontinued. As an existing customer, you should be able to keep them unless you cancel the foxtel service. I called to enquire and potentially book an install for IQ2. The guy I spoke to was not sure and asked if he could put me on hold while he checked. After about 5 mins he came back and said that he spoke to Telstra and confirmed that any discounts will be retained. Apparently only cancelling our existing Foxtel account and then resigning would invalidate the old loyalty discounts. Of course, this is all based on what they told me. I won't be 100% sure until the first bill. We get the IQ2 on July 9th.
