Sorry to hit on a topic thats probably been covered. But I have a ps3 hook into my yamaha AVR 6.1 via optical and it just sounds crap on blu rays.

Only seems to output stereo and things that should be loud ie. crashed and explasions just arnt, rather quiet...even when the amp is cranked.

If I stram audio from my pc volume level is much higher.

Can someone put me on the right trace, I believe I have bit stram selected as the output method on optical

Using bistream over optical you're going to be limited to a maximum of the 1.5mbps 'core' soundtrack and not the full HD versions. If you want HD audio you need to use the HDMI connection to the AVR and select PCM audio in the PS3 - assuming you have an AVR with HDMI input that can accet audio over HDMI?

What AVR are you using ?

I've had my PS3 connected to my 2700B via optical and it sounded great ... not as good as HDMI, but definitely an improvement over DVD quality sound.

i also have a yamaha amp and the blu ray movie does not sound as good as a normal dvd.

does 5.1 need to be selected in the language menu on the dvd itself.

anymore help with this would be appreciated

Assuming you're outputting via optical then yes you do need to select the appropriate 5.1 track on the disk and you also need to setup the PS3 correctly, so in...

Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Output Settings

Make sure you've got the right output selected (digital out optical) and also tick ALL the available Audio Output formats.

The problem you are having is as previously mentioned.

You need to enable bitstreaming audio in the PS3 audio setup menu.

Ignore the garbage warning message about "missing features". Since you are using an optical connection, you will never be able to use the missing features that Sony warn you about anyway.

Currently the problem you are having is that the PS3 is converting the Blueray Dolby/DTS soundtracks to a LPCM signal and then downmixing it to stereo and sending it to your optical receiver. If you had an HDMI receiver, the downmixing to stereo would not be happening. Bitstreaming will let the PS3 pipe the proper Dolby Digital or DTS sountracks straight to your receiver.

everyone keeps saying change to bitstream on the ps3,

we have said we have done this and still the same

what i am asking is do we need to select the 5.1 sound on the dvd itself

I didn't see any of your replies mentioning that you had done this already.

You have mentioned that the Bluray movies "don't sound as good" as DVD movies. Is this consistent across ALL Bluray movies you have tried? And in what way does it not sound as good?

Are you able to tell if your receiver is getting a full 5.1 soundtrack from the PS3 when playing Bluray? (for example, my receiver has a picture showing all five speakers active when I am getting a Dolby Digital signal)

In theory, if you have bitstream enabled on the PS3, and optical output configured, it will just select the core Dolby or DTS tracks and output them via the optical connection automatically. There is nothing stopping you from manually selecting the core Dolby or DTS sountrack yourself in the Bluray menu, but it shouldn't be necessary.

theres also another audio section in the bd/dvd settings

change the audio setting in that section from linear pcm to bitstream

Hi

I have a Panasonic 50" PZ700A. Marantz SR7200 amp. I just bought myself a PS3. I connect the PS3 to the TV via HDMI. From my TV I connect to my amp via Optical digital.

The problem I'm having is I cannot get better than Stereo Audio out of my amp when configured this way. If I connect my ps3 to the amp via optical no worries. I've read this thread and tried everything here but still cannot get it to work. I can get "surround" from my tv ok if I'm watching TV broadcast in surround for example. Unfortunately I have not other devices which are HDMI capable and my amp doesn't have HDMI ports either. Is there any other thing I should be trying? I'd rather not have to connect another digital cable to my amp. Surely HDMI should support this...

Thanks

I think you'll find that it's your TV that doesn't support it. It's probably passing the signal from the PS3 out as stereo. You should connect an optical cable from the PS3 to the AVR. You'll at least get 5.1. Alternatively, upgrade your AVR to one with HDMI inputs.

I'll chase that end up. Hope not the case, although might give me the excuse to buy the SR7002........

Optical out on most (perhaps all) TV's are just for the inbuilt HD tuner. They were never intended to pass on surround sound from a HDMI input. That's all there is to it. Audio needs to be connected directly to the amp.
