SkadollaX Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 (edited) My friend owns a Sony VPL-HS3 projector and is complaining about the picture dropping off intermittently. He says it began happening a month or so ago but recently it's got worse. The way he describes it is every couple of minutes the picture will disappear and a black screen displaying component will appear for a couple of seconds and then go back to normal. This problem then repeats itself intermittently and indefinitely.... He has an Xbox 360 and a standalone DVD player connected to a component wall socket he himself has wired up through to the projector on the ceiling. It is happening regardless of the player connected to the projector. I have advised him that he bypass the component wall plate and wiring in his roof and connect his Xbox directly to the projector but due to the awkward position of his PJ it might take him a while to get up there and do it. So until he can perform this test I cannot assume the problem is with the projector itself. He has about 1400 hours on a lamp Sony claims has a life of around 2000-3000 hours. The unit is not displaying any error messages and is otherwise operating normally. Outside of all the possible reasons this might be happening can anyone here tell me if a globe on it's way out might behave in this way ? Remember the unit isn't going into standby or switching off it just stops displaying or receiving a picture for a couple of seconds and during this time it still manages to display the words "Component Input" on the screen. Which in all my years of owning a projector means the component input is selected on the PJ but it’s not receiving a signal. My money is on the wiring, component plate or the circuit board in the PJ, especially considering the words "Component Input" appear whilst the picture disappears. But for sake of friendship I'm here asking your advice as he has little faith in mine......thanks. Edited June 5, 2008 by SkadollaX
DruDel Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 OK I'm the guy who had this problem. It ended up being the PJ multi cable that came out of the back of the projector itself. It could have been loose from the last time I had pulled the PJ down to clean it or over a period of time just had come loose. It seems like a crappy connection to begin with so I would have to keep my eye on this in the future. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my good friend for taking the time to post this problem even though it seems that the original advice he gave me to check the cables ended up being the correct diagnosis. You da man!
