Hi Guys,

I have a copy of Digital Video Essentials on the way, Not the HD Basics version on Bluray or HD-DVD , just the normal one on DVD.

I am going to calibrate my 42" Samsung Plasma with it.

Has anyone here used this DVD to calibrate their Plasma or LCD?

What are your thoughts? Is it worth it?

I paid $35.80 for it incl Express Delivery, im really anticipating its arrival so i can calibrate my TV correctly.

Any opinions would be much appreciated.

You got it for a great price, i bought mine for $50

I used to to calibrate my 46" F81 LCD and it has made a huge difference.

I tuned it by eye before hand and I got it pretty close, the settings were only a little out but that little bit out made a big difference.

Now everything looks balanced looks really natural.

Definitely a worthwhile thing to do :D

Yeah I just bought the standard DVD. Got it from Todd's Sound and Vision in Virginia Brisbane.

Let me know how you go getting your Blu Ray version working though cause I wouldn't mind getting it as well when I get my Blu Ray player.

After getting used to the 46" after time I wish I had of had the extra money for the 52" LOL

Unfortunately once you lived with the 52” for a while you would want something significantly bigger still, thats just the way it works. :D

You'll find plenty of detailed info here Video Essentials

By the way Send-it.com UK have the Combo HD-DVD/SD (Pal) DVE disc for £4.99 plus £1.60 postage (approx $13.80) Send-it.com

Guys

I bought DVE at ezydvd Indooroopilly Westfield in Brisbane earlier this week ($29.83) but still not so sure about it.

Everything seems to be geared to Component or S-video to a CRT screen. The commentary refers to other screens being dealt with further along, or in the case of www.videoessentials.com above, Chapter 8..... but I don't see it.

Running it on Pioneer LX60D to Kuro 508xda by HDMI it needs the colour at full blast before the blues settle into the background and the red and green are still all over the place, the under black can't be seen in the PLUGE pattern but seems to want brightness at +4 and contrast set way down about 25 but you are told only a CRT will produce any greyscale "bloom".

Interestingly the full PLUGE 6 black bars did appear when I reconnected my 7 year old Pio DV 533K player by composite connection. Not sure if that is telling me something about the LX 60 or HDMI, but I will admit to being of an age more at the senior end of the scale so may well be I am missing something completely. I am guessing the you need to go in deeper than the "user" picture controls.

I can't say the PQ at the suggested settings is all that bad but skin tones seem a bit patchy. I can't help but think I calibrated better using a freeze frame on a guy's white shirt.
