Happs Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Hi, I am having an issue with my Krix sub in that when passing through 2-channel audio, the sub plays the bass for 10mins, but then enters standby mode. I may well have missed something in the AV Receiver or sub set up that's causing this, but I'm just not too sure what to try to resolve it. I have floor standing fronts so they produce an OK amount of bass, but I thought I should really use the sub for 2.1 audio to get the best sound out of my system regardless of the number of channels my audio source is outputting in or whether there is a dedicated bass track or not. I have the Krix Seismix 3 sub off an Integra 7.8 receiver (essentially the same as an Onkyo in terms of set up). When I listen to 2-channel audio, for example music cd's or Foxtel, I want to 'force' my system to be a 2.1 system, essentially forcing my sub to produce the bass sounds and my front L&R speakers to do the mid-high range sounds. In the receiver settings I have my speakers set to 80hz THX. When the audio passes through, the sub detects a bass frequency and plays the bass for all audio inputs, so it's obviously receiving the audio signal from the receiver. However after 10 mins, the Krix switches to standby mode, therefore I loose my bass. When listening to 5.1 it does not happen and I'm sure it's not a fault with the sub itself, it's likely to be a set up error on my part. Somehow it knows that with 5.1 it is receiving a dedicated bass audio feed, but when I force its use with 2.1 audio it seems to not detect bass and switches to standby (as it’s supposed to do), even though bass is actually playing from the sub in the first 10 mins. Is there something I need to do in terms of setup to make the sub know that it needs to remain on and play 2.1 bass frequencies, even though it’s not a dedicated bass audio track like in 5.1/7.1 etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Happs.

If the signal is too weak or there is not much bass from the source then the sub will which to standby. If you can't switch it to "on" then you have to turn up the test tone/preout setting for the sub on the receiver and turn the volume down on the sub itself to re-equalise. Then the preout signal may be strong enough from the amp to get the sub out of standby. Have had this problem when watching movies late at night, because I've go the volume so low, the preout signal was not enough to activate the sub. My sub amp has 3 power settings off/auto/on.
Dortamur Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 How loud is the bass signal sent to the Seismix 3? I found that my Seismix 3 took a fair amount of signal-level sent to it before it would turn on, although I haven't had it power down while noticeably in use. I fixed it somewhat by cranking up the Sub line volume on the Amp, and turning down the output volume on the Sub itself, so that the sub line level was higher, but the output volume was about the same.
Darryn Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I have the same amp and sub combo and have no dramas with output when listening in stereo mode. This may sound silly but is the sub set to yes in speaker config in the set up menu? I also have bass set to double bass and have a left and right input to the seismix(out of the amp with a splitter stereo cable). The seismix is on the high gain setting. Darryn
Happs Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 Thanks very much for your assistance guys!! In short it looks like I'll just need to invest more time in trying to set up the correct balance in the settings. The sub is 'noticably working' in 2.1 channel, but still switches to stand by mode, so I assumed that means enough of a bass signal was being sent to the sub. But it seems like maybe the clarity/loudness of the bass signal still may not be strong enough to keep the sub recognising it as a valid audio channel input. djg - Yeah the sub is definitely set to yes in speaker config and all test patterns etc work fine. Given proper surround sound works flawlessly, the set up is correct, so I think it has to do with the setting adjustments themselves. I don't have it set to double bass though, and it's only a single line from the amp to the sub, so that's something else I could try. Thanks again...

I have the software to do it, but I think I'll take it to a repair agent just to be safe...

Haven't done the update yet either, I'm moving to Melbourne next month so might get it done then by an agent. BTW, I had the double bass set to yes from the get go and then later on added the stereo cable to the sub. Might be worth a try - from the manual: "Double Bass With this setting, you can boost bass output by feeding front left and right channel bass sounds to the subwoofer. This setting can only be made if the Subwoofer setting in step 4 is set to Yes, and the Front setting in step 5 is set to Full Band." Also found this : The subwoofer produces no sound • If the source material contains no audio in the LFE channel, the subwoofer produces no sound. This may explain the turn off after 10 min if you have just finished listening to an input with LFE channel then switch to stereo. Are you feeding in an analog signal or digital. I am pretty much using a PS3 via HDMI for music but if I get the chance I'll try analog from my cd player and see if it holds the sub signal. Darryn
