Guys I just can't find a nice discussion on this topic.

I'm currently trialling the zoom method for achieving 2.35 to 1 ratio, and last night realised that some subtitles that appeared went off screen.

Now if I'd masked the screen with velvet etc. I'm going to have problems there I imagine.

How does CIH set up work with subtitles?

I'm thinking of just mounting a screen without a black frame now... sort of a floating frameless look.

Assuming you're using a 2.37:1 screen and side masking for 16x9 material you're probably better off sticking with a black frame unless your "floating" screen is very close to the wall it's mounted on and that wall is dark grey or black, otherwise the subtitles or parts of them may be out of focus or lost in the background.

An easy solution for a framed 2.37:1 screen when using the zoom method is to simply have a bigger frame at the bottom, one that would cover the area that a normal 16x9 screen would occupy because that's where any subtitles framed outside the 2.37:1 area will appear.

White/yellow subtitles on black felt, flock, velvet etc. work fine. In fact when I was using a Panny S97 I used to move the subtitles down onto the frame for 2.37:1 films.

Yeah, it sucks. I asked Oppo if a firmware update for the 983 might have a subtitle moving option, and the answer was probably not, but they are hassling their chip provider to include it.

Basically any BlueRay player that can do vertical stretch and position subtitles correctly will have me handing over cash faster than you can say "Me too!".

Some things should just be left alone, and one of those things is subtitles in a film. Regardless of the AR in a Cinema, the subtitles will always be in the active picture, but for some reason, the studios that make film to video transfers think they are doing us a favour by relocating them into the black bars and they are not.

Subtitles is one of two sticking points for CIH using video. The other is of course having only 810 vertical lines instead of the full 1080 we should have...
