Hi Guys,

I have a HTPC running the ASUS P5N-EM HDMI motherboard connected via HDMI to a Samsung HT receiver and onto a Samsung Plasma. The HTPC is running XP SP3. I can get the video out but no audio whether connected directly to the TV or via the receiver. I have spent hours and hours changing BIOS settings and attempting to update drivers with no success. There is no S/PDIF output on the MoBo so no option of bypassing HDMI for the audio side of things.

Has anyone had any success in using HDMI from a PC? Asus won't respond to help inquiries and Samsung simply say that their equipment is not compatible with HTPC's!!!

hey,

possibly try, on the HTPC, go into Sound settings (in control panel) select the HDMI sound (ie SPDIF) output, select properties, select Supported Formats tab, and de-select (that's UNselect) all of the options (ie unselect DTS Audio, Dolby Didital, etc).

Then try it.

Worked for me for similar, HTPC, HDMI -> Samsung TV. not same mobo.

cheers

In the end I blew away the XP installation and went with a Vista install. Low and behold, the HDMI driver that came with the motherboard now worked - but only in stereo mode. I cannot select any other speaker configuration than stereo. I get the same result whether directly connected to the TV or through a 6.1 HMDI amp (I had thought perhaps the option to select multiple speakers would only become available if the amp was plugged in but sadly, no).

I tried installing the updated ASUS driver from their website (10.0.0.6) but this just gives a "installation failed" message (same thing it did in XP). I tried a newer version I obtained through a link from the Nvidia website (10.0.0.23) and this installs just fine but no sound again. I had to roll back to the original to get stereo again.

Surely it shouldn't be this hard? The driver support from ASUS (and the other manufacturers) for this chipset seems abominable.
