I've recently upgraded to a Pioneer PDP-508XDA display and it has now opened up a new world of picture experience, and a whole range of questions on best connectivity with my other components.

My setup is:

Display: Pioneer PDP-508XDA

AV Receiver: Yamaha RX-V740

DVD: Pioneer DV-355

PVR: Topfield TF5000PVRt

I'm trying to figure out if I'm missing out on picture quality/resolution through various connection options.

I initially connected the DVD direct to the Plasma via component, but found the sound (via the AV Receiver) was slightly out of sync.

I next connected the DVD to the AV Receiver and then to the Plasma via component.

The Plasma now shows the input as 480i resolution, which I believe to be less than standard DVD resolution (576i ?).

As both the DVD player and AV Receiver are quite old I don't see any settings or information on them as to what resolutions they will handle.

Does anyone know how AV Receivers normally handle all resolutions - ie if I feed it a 768i input will it output 768i, or are AV Received often a 'bottle-neck' in terms of resolution in a setup if they are old?

Bottom line is I'm trying to get the best resolution into my plasma without the sounds sync issues that appeared when the DVD was directly connected.

Thanks for any information

Hi Kidhazy,

Is the 740 an upscaling amp, I have two Yamaha amps, neither have HDMI. I'm not sure about the 740 but I think it is the model my uncle had, he had problems with plugging in different cables sd it didn't upscale to best input.

I cant see why though you would have syncing problems, I have the 1500, and I have always used the setup you mentioned, DVD (in my case HDDVD) to TV direct and sound to receiver. Previously it was JVC DVD player and no syncing problems.

You should be getting 576p from your DVD, and if its a US disc then only 480 lines, not sure if it will be 480i or p for a US disc.

Best of luck.

I don't know - I guess this is part of the problem. I haven't been able to find any info on the amp re does it do any processing of the video image. The only info I can find is that it will convert composite input into s-video input. But I'm running with component, so I'm assuming (maybe incorrectly) that it does no processing of the video image at all and just switches it straight through.

EDIT: Just found an old brochure that indicates the RX-740 is "HDTV(720p/1080i) Compatibility". So I guess I can assume that if I pump 720p into the receiver it will come out as 720p. So the 480i that I'm seeing must be from the DVD source ??? My head's starting to spin with too many numbers, and combinations.

Maybe it was just me, but it seemed to be just a small fraction out - noticed it with music videos, but may have to give it another run. I tried testing for it using the reference material in the DSE DVD - but that was too fast to notice anything.

I'll have to double-check the DVD Player settings as the 480i was what I was seeing just when the player was at it's own menu (ie. without a disc inserted). Maybe I've got the player outputting NTSC ??

Thanks for the info though.
