GTO Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I was very impressed with the quality of this transmission on Sunday evening, particularly the 5.1 sound. Besides very much enjoying the movie, the picture quality was good, but what impressed me most of all was the great 5.1 sound--it got the S/W working well enough to rattle a few windows etc-definitely the best sound I've experienced via a tv transmission yet. Cheers, GTO.
peterca Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Yes, it was a pleasant suprise to see CH7 broadcasting a movie in 5.1.
Inego1503560167 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 A little annoying that they, along with most, still broadcast in 16:9 rather than OAR (or was it OAR on HD?) Kent

OakenShield1 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 From memory it was 16:9 in HD and it was an awesome pic/sound IMHO
dunnas Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Is that why I have black bands above & below the picture? Can anything be done about that? Cheers, GTO. You can zoom in, degrading the picture quality and cutting off the edges.
Hydrology Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 The picture quality even in the trailers promoting it looked fantastic. I was so tempted to record it but non-OAR coupled with s**tload of ad breaks it became a no-no for me. Will pick it up on BluRay. A decent effort by 7 however.
Neon Kitten Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Yes, it looked great - but with an ad break almost every 5 minutes I ended up hitting "delete" on the PVR within the first half hour and figured I'd catch the film properly on Blu-Ray some other time. Unfortunately, Seven's new policy with movies seems to be to insert many, many frequent ad breaks. It makes watching the movie a painful, pointless experience.
LukeF1503559517 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Very impressed with the PQ of the movie, although i got some pixelation in a few parts. (3 or 4 times).

Cheers, GTO. Does anyone know when Prime will start broadcasting 5.1 audio. In the ACT, we got the HD picture but just the crappy 2.0 stereo soundtrack... I've noticed Prime in particular are starting to push the HD advertising with little banner that pops up in adverts Prime HD - Channel 60. Would be a pity if they continue to broadcast the lesser soundtrack - I guess its still a transmitter issue for the 'regional' markets like ACT.
mattls Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Just watch the battle scene on youtube - it's the only 10 minutes worth watching in my opinion, and I loved the books.
stinhambo Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 I thought the film was a bit crap to be honest (still love the story line!) and the frequent ad breaks drove me to insanity. I much preferred the cartoon film instead!

The books were definatley darker. If only it was made by Peter Jackson and New line instead of Disney. Still enjoyed it though.
SDL Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Damn, watched it on my LCD which wasn't hooked up to the surround system, didn't know it was in 5.1 But found the ad breaks too much as many have said, couldn't get into it as well as I might of.
pc9630 Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Never saw it but from the sounds of it with the ads maybe I was lucky and should look for a HD torrent
djOS Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Damn, watched it on my LCD which wasn't hooked up to the surround system, didn't know it was in 5.1 But found the ad breaks too much as many have said, couldn't get into it as well as I might of. I watched this the other day and the ad breaks were excruciating even tho I was using the 30sec skip on my Media Center - the 5.1 surround sound was excellent for an FTA broadcast however the bitrate really let this movie's PQ down when the action got fast and furious.
BribieG Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 16:9 seems to be the thing nowadays, it's ages since I saw a major movie on TV in OAR. LOTR was broadcast in 16:9 by 9 and 7. I don't know if they get the transfer in 16:9 from the distributors or whether they just zoom in (or 'centre cut') an OAR transfer. Last time Return of the King was on 7 I had my box set going on the DVD as well zoomed to fill the screen and both versions looked absolutely identical in every scene (Distance of Gandalf's nose from top of screen etc etc).
