iceblinkfroufrou Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 hi. wasn't sure where to ask this but seeing its on the back of my lcd tv thought it may be ok here. there is a dvi socket on the back of my tele, in LAYMENS terms what exactly is it? how does it effect the pq? is it an improvement? is it a positive?
mimwdv Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 DVI is usually a computer video output. It's the highest quality you can get - equivalent to HDMI. HDMI to DVI adaptors are easily available and they both carry the same kind of signal. The biggest difference between the two is that HDMI can carry sound, and can carry content protected video (ie encrypted BluRay disks). DVI doesn't do either. If you have a choice of how to connect 2 pieces of equipment, HDMI or DVI should be your first choice if you're after the best quality image. I hope that was layman enough. If I didn't make anything clear enough, feel free to ask!
pgdownload Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 In laymans terms: DVI is basically the same as HDMI which are both connection types that transmit digital signals (ie a lot of 1s and 0s) however DVI requires a seperate connection to handle sound. All other connection types are analogue (eg RGB, component, svideo etc.) There are cheap adapters that turn a DVI into HDMI and visa versa They are only relevant if you have a STB or Bluray player or some other piece of equipment that has HDMI/DVI outputs. Such outputs are usually only relevant on HD equipment (not SD) HDMI/DVI is basically a similar PQ to component or RGB (top analogue connections) and better than SVideo (say 20% better) HDMI/DVI to a large extend was invented because the data stream can be encrypted and copy protected and thus shows played over it can not be copied. If you have some DVI/HDMI equipment then its simple to join them up with such a cable (top PQ) but otherwise component is just as good generally. Regards Peter Gillespie
Guest EZYHD Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 With DVI as said you can use a DVI to HDMI adaptor, then a HDMI cable to your device, then once you replace to a newer device later you can reuse the HDMI cable.
wheelz Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Foxy maybe you could direct him to someone that sells dvi/hdmi adaptors
viewer1503559544 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 DVI....hmm No one could have the woes I did...but look at this too for some further information...hdmi to dvi can be a problem...but not always. http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=65792
Shonky* Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 The biggest difference between the two is that HDMI can carry sound, and can carry content protected video (ie encrypted BluRay disks). DVI doesn't do either. Incorrect. DVI can support HDCP. Generally though many DVI devices do not support it.
