bernievink Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 (edited) Hi all you are probably aware but there is no topic on this at the moment so I thought I would add one as of 9th of May there are new firmwares for Sony BDPS1, BDPS300 and BDPS500 in my case the BDPS300 the firmware update is 3.90 from the previous 3.80 and appears to be worth the trouble as it loads faster from startup and POTC are quicker to load as well I dont know what other improvements there are, here is the description from Sony asia Improvements over firmware version 3.80: • Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs. Compatibility with BD-R/RE disc burned by Click to Disc Ver.1.1 and Click to Disc Editor Ver.1.1 software. (The update of these softwares is required.) Additional improvements over original firmware: • Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs. • Compatibility with the newly released BD-R/RE format (BDMV). bernievink Posted May 30, 2008 Author Posted May 30, 2008 Oops forgot to mention if any one in the Melbourne area wishes to have my upgrade disc now that I have successfully upgraded my player please email me Regards Bernie
Topend Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Being new to this site this is the first I have heard about firmware upgrades for Blu Ray. I have the BDPS300 which I purchased a few weeks ago. Can I download the latest firmware and upload to the machine myself? Cheers, Topend.
bernievink Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 Do this first: Check the player firmware version: o Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BDP-S300 player is connected. o Power on the BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc player. o If the player starts to play a disc, press the STOP button and wait until the blue Sony Blu-ray Disc screen is displayed on the television before proceeding. o On the remote control, press the SYSTEM MENU button. o At the System Menu screen, use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight Setup and then press the ENTER button. o At the Setup screen, use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight Video Setup and then press the ENTER button. o Use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight TV Type and then press the ENTER button. o On the remote control, press BLUE button. o The firmware version currently installed on the BDP-S300 will be listed on the television screen. once you have this info and knowing that the latest version is 3.90 you can then decide to start looking for the update site for your area, in Astralia it is Sony-Asia Regards
Topend Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Just found it. Thanks for the quick reply. I have 3.20 so I am downloading 3.90 as I type. Cheers.
bernievink Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 The Sony Asia firmware update page is here Be aware this is for Region B players only: Australia and Asian countries http://www.sony-asia.com/support/productca...site=hp_en_AP_i American users go to Sony.com in the USA Regards
Topdog Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 (edited) One thing when you upgrade, the instructions are slightly misleading. The process takes around 10-15 minutes and you are told in Step 6 not to close the tray, the process is still continuing. Step 7 says the update is complete when the DL OK appears on the front panel display. The first time I did it I was still waiting 50 minutes later and the fault finding procedure stated I would need to contact Sony... Well I thought what the heck, the door will have to be shut now which I did and Lo and behold the DL OK message appeared and further checks established the F/W had been updated successfully. I missed the first instance as I went a did other thing during the process and missed the original message display. Next time I upgraded I watched the whole process like a hawk and Yes there was the message. Only stays there for a short period. Have fun. FYI there is a forum called forum.blu-ray.com worth checking out. Has lots to say about all things Blu-Ray. PS They advise using anything but a new CD-R. I used a new CD-RW with no problems, just won't use it for anything but F/W upgrades . Edited June 3, 2008 by Topdog
Topend Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 I tried to do the upgrade. The machine showed "can not read disc". It then showed "data disc". I burnt another CD-R and the same thing happened. Any suggestions? Topend
bernievink Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 Hi Topend When you ran the file you downloaded it should have created a file called UPDATE_BDPS300_VER0390.ISO You then need to use either Nero or ImgBurn or another burning program to burn this cd "image" to a disc when you finally have the disc burnt there should be these files on the disc BRANDED approx 1kb S0001.BIN approx 1kb S0002.BIN approx 53mb S0003.BIN approx 1kb when you insert this disc into your BDPS300 it should automatically do the update Hope this helps Regards Bernie

bernievink Posted June 24, 2008 Author Posted June 24, 2008 (edited) @ djos There is no "US" or "Euro" version anymore, they have all been Universal FW releases for some time. Hi djos If there are no different versions why do the website updates from both Europe and Asia have this warning before you download their files Warning: This utility is only for use with the BDP-S300 as sold within Asia Pacific. Not all models are sold in all countries Warning: This utility is only for use with the BDP-S300 as sold within Europe. Not all models are sold in all countries. Hope you can show some light here Regards Edited June 24, 2008 by bernievink
soul_remedy Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Just updated with the FTP site provided.. Used a cheapo CD-R disc and can report no problems. If anyone needs help with it or anything just give me a PM.
Topdog Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 (edited) I have started using a CD-RW despite their warning not to and have had no problems with the last two updates(3.90 & 3.95). Take two precautions though. I have a good copy of 3.7 on CD-R on fallback/standby and I do a full erase on the CD-RW before burniong the new F/W to it. Supposedly, according to one of the Blu-ray forums,( forum.blu-ray.com ) f/w versions from 3.7 on to date allow the BDP-S300 to decode Dolby True HD over HDMI. It is undocumented..Anyone tried it? At the moment I am using the S300 Multi Channel Analogue connection into my non HDMI compatible Sony AVR and selecting PCM 5.1 uncompressed(lossless) audio option on the disk menu and getting pretty good results. So far have only tried on BD, "The Patriot"... Edited June 24, 2008 by Topdog
